I'm in California. I know I can pick up from the dispensary with just the recommendation but do I have to register with the state for a card or is getting a card optional? What are the benefits of registering? If I don't register with the state will this recommendation stay as a private medical record?

    Thanks.

You won't ever be harassed by LEOs
    Yes

The state ID card is 100% voluntary. The main advantage, other than it's really easy to verify, is that LEOs (Cops, Sherrifs, CHP) MUST take the ID card as proof that you're a patient (once verified and they HAVE to verify it) and leave you alone. WIth only your written recommendation LEO's do have the right to confiscate your meds, give you a ticket and a date in court, and don't necessarily have to verify your status at all. Now you'll get all your meds back once you go to court and the ticket will be tossed, but it's still a hassle.

Finally, yes your medical status would remain private if you do not get the card. If you do get the card you will go into a database that is accessible by other governmental agencies, however, there's not much they can do with that information.
