Just bought HTG 400w HPS, bulb dead in 6hrs...

  1. Hello. Sorry, I am frustrated and I was hoping someone could help me with a question. I finally upgraded from CFL's to by buying a 400w HPS from HTG Supply (a grow shop in several states). I went to the store so this wasn't shipping damage. Assembly of the hood was cake and the bulb seemed fine when I installed it. Everything was fine about two hours after I turned it on. Next day (tonight) I come home and the bulb is dead (two little piles of white crystally stuff on bottom of bulb). So is this just bad luck or does their gear suck? Only issue on my end I can think of is the plug this is going to in not grounded. I have the ballast plugged into a serge protector that tells me the wiring is wrong due to no ground. Could that be my issue? I hate introducing that to the conversation because of the people that are just gonna say "oh thats your issue", but I want to be honest as well so I get sound advice and not put a bad rap on them if indeed that is the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I love that store...I also shop there...have a store about 10 miles from my house. I purchased a 400 watt HPS fixture from them and I have had that thing running 12-18 hrs a day for the past 3 years and it has never failed to fire-up..not sure if ground is an issue, did you go back and talk to them about it? They have always been helpful to me. Could be you just got a bad bulb..nobody is perfect.

  3. yes...the ground is most likely the issue, that ground helps the energy flow, when it stops flowing, bulb blows. :smoke:

  4. Yeah, you can't plug them into a power strip. They need to be grounded to your house through and electrical outlet.

  5. You CAN plug them into a powerstrip if the powerstrip is the 3 prong grounded kind and is plugged into a grounded outlet..mines been plugged into the same powerstrip for years now.

  6. i have two of them and not a prob out of either.i ordered them about two month's apart and both work great.my plug's came grounded.

  7. also oil from your hands is bad for the bulb make sure u wipe your bulb off after installing it

  8. Thats very true....I always wrap a paper towel around my bulb when I am changing it so my hands never touch it, desposable plastic gloves work well also.
