Hey guys I felt spontaneous for once. I was researching the kindle fire, and i realized i had no use for it because all I want is a device for reading, I have my iphone for everything else. So i decided to buy the Kindle Paperwhite for 119 dollars with 1 day shipping for another 20! I'm very excited to get it. I love to read fantasy and philosophy. I really love to get absorbed in a good fantasy book. Books like the legend of drizzt series, eragon series, etc. If you guys know any good fantasy books out right now please leave a comment it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys and happy reading!
You will like it. My wife has one and she uses it all the time. I have a Nexus 7 that I run the Kindle app on. Works good but the Paperwhite will be much better for just reading.
I was looking into this series actually. The only thing that is stopping me is that the character is a female, and for some reason when i read books with a girl main character i have trouble relating with them. I'm far from sexist, it's just how i perceive things i guess haha. I might just buy the first book because it'll probably only be like 3 dollars on the kindle.
She's more of a tomboy. There's actually a lengthy portion in the first book where she has to learn to act like a girl for a deceptive purpose. But I understand what you're saying completely. She's definitely the main character, but the supporting characters (almost all are male) figure into the story line just as much as she does. Give it a shot. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's really a fresh concept when it comes to your standard fantasy novel with magic users.
Lev Grossman wrote a couple of novels that I enjoyed very much. Kind of like a mixture of Harry Potter and Narnia but for adults.
The Magicians is the first and The Magician King is the sort of sequel to it. In my opinion they can stand alone from one another.
life of pi. awesome book. cloud atlas, awesome book. hunger games if you have not read them - also really good books. Yeah one of the main characters is a girl, but shes a fucking badass
Thanks for all the tips guys, I began reading the Mist Born prologue for free and it really seems so good! So many options here so tough to decide. I'll probably end up reading them all thanks guys. By the way the kindle came today and i love it. It feels so much better than a book, and the screen appears to be really clear as well.
Glad you're happy with your kindle. I love mine too. If you haven't been through Discworld series already, read some of those. Terry Pratchett's the author. Start with Colour of Magic Also the Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust is excelent. Some of the best books I've ever read. It's a bit odd, and dosen't follow the comman formulas we tend to see in a lot of fantasy, but that's what akes it shine. It is original without being kooky. Hilarious while not being trivial. The main charachter narrates in first person smartass, but most of the other charachters in the book are interesting and exciting as well. Start with Jhereg. I'd also suggest the complete works of HP Lovecraft, because it's 99 cents and gives quite a lot of reading material. He gets a bit formulaic after a while, but when you haven't got much time, a short story or two from him is great.
I understand what you mean. I am female, so it's not "relating to the a female" that's my problem, it's just that lots of books--especially fantasies--with female mains tend to either become near mary sue stories, or turn into romance novels. Fuck that shit. If I wanted to read a romance novel, I'd go read a romance novel. I picked up a fantasy book because I wanted adventure, action, magic, and strange worlds and cultures, not so I can watch some stupid bitch angst about crushing on the mysterious guy with cobalt blue eyes and dark hair (or whatever) but spend the whole book making up excuses not to tell him. There can be some romantic subplots, but if they choke off the main story, I'm not interested. Also quit expecting me to sympathize with lameass female characters just because they're female. If she's weak, dumb, and stupid, I'm not going to sympathize with her very much. I may stick around if the rest of the book is good (one I can think of, Illusion by Paula Volsky had a female main who was weak, dumb, stupid, and useless, but it was okay, because the story was awesome, the other charachters were great, and because she obviously wasn't supposed to be a sympathetic charachter), but don't expect me to like her just because she's a whiny girl. Also, in almost every book there's an identical Obligatory Sexist Scene, where the female lead proves herself to some old curmudgeon who says "girls don't/can't do that" or tries to bar her from entering some group. Half the time he immediately forgets his previous prejudice, in much the way that nobody does ever. And I think "Why the fuck did you waste that jiucy delicious conflict, authorperson?" Not all female mains end up doing this though. I try not to toss out books just because they have a female lead. But when I see warning signs that she's going to be yet another Annoying Fantasy Heroine, I'll usually drop it.
Hey guys so I'm almost done with the first mistborn book and I'm hooked. Vin is such a beast and the whole allomancer pushing and pulling is something I've never even heard of which I like. I have a question about the kindle though. Do you guys shut it off after you're done reading or do you leave it in sleep mode? Just curious.
Try Wool by Hugh Howey. Great read that was well written. The omnibus edition is $5.99 on amazon for the kindle version.
Told ya it was good! I don't have a Kindle, I have a Nook, and I always just put it into sleep mode. With an e-ink display there's really no reason to shut it down. They're pretty efficient.
