Joining the military with expired MMJ rec? + other questions

Discussion in 'Medical Cannabis: Treatments & Patient Experiences' started by RatM77, Sep 4, 2012.

  1. Hello, I had a few questions regarding topic title. In summer of 2011 I received a reccomendaion for medical marijuana, aswell with my paper recommendation they also issued me an id card. (my reccomendaion is now expired for a couple months) Is this id card the same card that you receive from the state when registering as a MMJ patient? From what I've read the state card you receive is from your county's department of health office. Could someone clarify this? I personally never registered myself with the state so I assume it's not?

With that said I regret getting my rec, truthfully I just got it as a spur of the moment thing cuz a couple other friends were getting them and I feel stupid for doing that. Basically I do not need marijuana at all I can function fine without it. I have a strong interest in military will my past stupidity come back to haunt me? Should I just tell my recruiter straight up about it or when he asks me about my marijuana history should I tell him I've smoked and neglect the card
part? When they do my background check will it show up on my records have me instantly DQ? Not sure if this is relevant but I was able to purchase a firearm and after my 10 days waiting period i passed a background check and was able to pick it up.

Thanks for reading, I look forward to responses, maybe they're are some military personal on this forum somewhere :)

Also I'm aware I cannot be stoned in the military being clean and staying clean will not be a problem, also I have no criminal history or tickets of the sort.

  2. My dad did 20 years military...he told a family friend that was in a similar situation to be honest if it's on your medical records bc they will find out... It wont be on any criminal background check that you have a MMJ card.....be honest and say you were medically recommended it by your physician although you don't use it despite ur Drs recommendation you do not feel that you need it hence the reason you let ur card expire. You will be given a physical and I'm sure they will be able to confirm that you can live without MMJ...

Plus you can get a waiver for anything as long as you are a strong candidate in every other aspect. My cousin got caught with 8lbs of weed before going into the Navy --they gave him a waiver, although that was ten years ago....he is still in btw

I'm sure you will be fine. Many ppl without Dr recommendations admit to using pot to recruiters and they got in. Show ur committed and a serious candidate and you'll be fine. Good luck sweetie.

  3. Thank you for your reply :)

I'm sure from reading my first post that you have figured I pretty much bullshit my reason to get my recommendation. I'm perfectly healthy, always have been.
I was only in seeing the doc for about 5-10 minutes and he already had all my paper work filled out and I was out the door. Hopefully they will look past that.

If I get a copy of my medical records and it does not show will is it safe to assume that any background check given by the military would not see it?

To be quite honest I'm not even sure if the physican was legit, I've tried googling his name and have found nothing, not sure if that's normal or not.

  4. Did you pay him? Were you able to get meds with it?

  5. I just got out of the Marine Corps after 5 years of service. I remember going through MEPs and the recruiting process. I was open about my past drug use, and since I said I used it 6 times, instead of 5, I was a drug waiver. Its considered experimentation from 5-62 uses or something. Be aware, you will have to write out every time and place and when you have smoke weed. So just fucking lie to them. They dont care honestly, and it wont come back to find you, at all.

With that said, good luck in the military. Make sure it is the right choice you want to make. With politics aside, you will learn how much bs goes on, with your chain of command and your country. I dont regret my decision in joining, but it is pretty much prison, with a bit more freedom.

And I am glad to be free...

  6. Your welcome

And I would say so as long as u have no criminal possession charges are tickets. Look at your medical records carefully and make sure this Dr. and his recommendation Is no where on your medical records. If it isn't then you don't have to bring up your MJ use so long as your confident you haven't used and you'll FOR SURE pass the drug test.

Now on the other hand if there is some sort of data base of previous MMJ card holders that they look into then they will find out... (never heard of them doing that btw) My Dad still works for the Navy and has an age old saying "Don't f*ck with the government." if such a database exists that they access and they find out you lied you'll just have to answer to that lie when you could have been honest in the first place bc in your situation it's not a big deal so long as your not still using....Ur card isn't even active anymore lol

...shit Ive heard ppl say on GC that they told their recruiters they smoked in the last month and the recruiters recommended detox pills for the DT and gave a waiver. Recruiters have numbers to meet....if it were me I'd just be honest...ur not the first and won't be the last person who used to smoke before having a successful military career....half our Presidents have admitted drug use lol...

    Hey listen here.

It happened. I don't bullshit, no reason.. pissed passed at MEPS on 10 days clean. I was a hardcore stoner seriously trying to delay my recruiting officer from takin me up but this guy was hardcore to pullin strings tryin to make quota..strait made it happen. IDK how but it did not flag... can't imagine that shit not coming up positive.. was all kosher to ship to boot camp several months after the UA but..

Ultimately it was determined I wasn't qualified to get into the marine corps that go around for unrelated to cannabis other"ethical reasons".

Evidently things changed after 9/11 and..

Few years later, signed up again.. went to meps, pissed absolutely clean. Hadn't touched weed for months. That sample raised suspension for some reason and I had to provide a second at random on zero notice something like 6 weeks later.

  8. Yeah it was 150$ lol. I got it july and I went to clinics like 20 times max between July and December and once 2012 arrived I decided I wanted to buy a gun but apparently a law was passed in California where MMJ patients could not buy guns so I waited it out for it to expire and didn't go to a clinic at all in 2012.

Ahh yeah I honestly don't know how many times I've smoked weed lol. Well over 62 that's for sure. I was considering joining the Army, AF, possibly Coast Guard just because I love being out in the ocean haha. I wonder if I said I only smoked like 5 times but they saw I went to a clinic more than 5 times if that would cause suspicion. Thank you for your reply and your service :)

I never gave the physician any insurance information of the like, he was actually out of town in the next county over so is there even a chance it could still show up on my medical records?

I agree being honest up front is the best. I've read if they find out you lied you can get a federal charge for false enlistment >_<

Ya I can see how the Army recruiters need to meet their quotas. I'm not sure if other branches (besides maybe Marines) where recruiters have numbers to meet.

That's relieving to hear :) I'm not so much worried about my weed use but more of that stupid card showing up even though it's expired. If I decide to join it probably won't be until after holidays this year to spend it with family unless I can into that DEP program and get shipped out early 2013. By that time my card will be expired for like 4-5 months and i'll be clean for a few months so I should be all set for MEPS.

Thank you all for your replies it's much appreciated!! :D
