Jiffy Seed Starter (OMRI organic ) - amended w EWCs , perlite, mycorrhizae..

  1. Found this at one of my local Home Depot’s in lieu of two cubic square of promix moisture- seed starter/potting MIX.. (needs to be amended. ZERO nutrients.. ) seed starter. I have a couple seedlings waiting to catch up to some first true leafers.. I figured, especially amended with all the good stuff. This will be great until I can get my good live soil ..

  2. I think @TimJ uses it as a starter mix for autos?

  3. i dont get what you are saying? you want to use the seed starter in solo cups? or what? just regular potting mix is fine too for seedlings i just save some of my old soil and use that for my seedlings and they are crushing now just try to do whatever you did last grow because it worked if you change up there could be problems that seed starter is basically like coco

  4. That jiffy seedling mix is great if your soil is too hot or cooking. I used it before. Now when I don't have soil to start my seedlings I would take a few handfuls from my flowering plants, from the very top layer. This soil is not too hot if you don't top dress, as it gets washed away with every watering.
You could amend it with whatever you'd like but it will be the most expensive base soil possibility.
Only thing I would add is it's not really like coco, because it contains lime. It is meant to be watered with non pH'ed water and I never add issue at transplant. Even used it and transplanted in coco perlite without issue.

  5. i read what you are planning on doing using the seed starter in 1 gallon pots until you transplant i would add perlite or your rootball will be in a dense environment down the road Does anyone concur with me on this?

  8. I use Jiffy seed starting mix for my starter plug when running auto-flowers. It's basically CSPM,wood pulp, vermiculite and lime.

  9. If that is not clearly labeled ORGANIC. It uses Aquagro 2000 as a wetting agent and is NOT organic. I have had poor results using the new promix blends with that new wetting agent. Good luck.

  10. i use the yellow promix it is labeled organic and so far so good of course i amended it but the seed starter is not the same as the promix potting mix will that wetting agent kill all the organic goodies in there?

  11. I just want you to have the best garden possible Mr Buckethead you have the awesome seeds and awesome lights now you need the perfect home for them to grow in and it IS crucial that the medium is a happy place for your roots to flourish I have messed around more than once experimenting and lived to regret it that why i stick to what worked in the past

  12. It still uses Yucca as a wetting agent if it's labeled ORGANIC. I'm not sure what the Aquagro 2000 does. But, I had such poor results with the large bail I purchased, I tossed it. The poor results were with cannabis, flower and vegetable starts. Most of the seeds were ones I saved myself. When I switched back to my cycled no till medium, everything grew perfectly.

  13. There’s a whole lot to be said for that lil statement. Especially for a ‘one and done’ soil mix. At one point I used to say I didn’t really know how to grow but I sure was good at transplanting. lol.

If you do experiment with a different mix it’s generally a good idea to try it out on a single plant first. Of course I’m about to break this rule. Just moved to an entirely new area and I’m about to try out a local bagged mix.

  14. I use jiffy ss for all kinds of plants, but not really canna. In fact during the winter I have done exactly what your doing (cause I had seed starter and castings and aeration) it works. The jiffy has vermiculite which holds water more than you may be used to with just perlite. Conversely, it doesnt breath as well as perlite. Not a problem, just keep it in mind with your watering regime.
    Cheers

  15. It’s actually loving it and they’re still really small so they’re destined for Coast of Maine live soil. I’m good.

  17. How is this not a good idea? it saves money on going directly into Stonington at such an early phase, (they don’t need any nutrients right now) plus they were bound in the solos.. I always find directly into a 5 gallon is very difficult unless you know how to water perfectly, let them fill up the 1 gallon nice and big full of roots (will only take a few weeks) and then I can slip them right into seven or 5 gallon. And finish them off with a quickness

  20. I suppose that the castings, I added in, will give me a little bit of nutrients to kick them off with. I kind of like made my own fox farms ,without the nutrients.. nice n loamy seed starter.
