Jiffy Pellets Question

  1. <HR style="COLOR: #258c25" SIZE=1>I got these Jiffy-7 seed starting pellets for the first time from a local grow shop, and following the directions I expanded them in water to 1.5", opened the netting top, placed a seed in each one and covered with peat. Then it says to cover the container holding the pellets with saran wrap until they sprout, which I did. I usually germ my seeds directly in soil which is similar to using these pellets except when I germ in soil I don't cover the cups with anything. My concern is that when they sprout, if I'm not there at the exact time, they will suffocate with the saran wrap covering. Will they still sprout without the covering? Or, will they be okay even if I leave the cover on?

  2. Depends how frequently you check them. Twice a day then no problem, you'll be getting the wrap off within hours of them poking through. Even once a day is probably fine. Conversely you could leave the wrap off and spray mist that Jiffy ball once a day to keep it moist.

  3. Thanks, I'm a little confused on what to do after they sprout. I have them in individual cups with saran wrap on each because I didn't have a tray at the time. When they sprout, do you know if I need to add soil to the cups and raise the pellet to soil level and use the cup as my initial pot, or do I just move them to a flat surface (tray) and just use the pellet as it is until the seedling is bigger and ready to transplant? Because the pellet is only about 1.5" x 1" which doesn't seem big enough to support a seedling for very long.

Also, while they are covered now, should they be under light so when they do sprout they will have immediate light, or should they be in a dark place? I have the cups in a shoebox right now with the lid on.

  4. They should be under light that way they don't stretch. You can use the cups as the initial pots just make sure there are dranage holes in the cups.

  5. you should've got the jiffy cubes that come with the propagation dome. no need for saran wrap, bcuz it has a clear plastic dome. plants wont suffocate in there either, just gotta make sure you put it under light as soon as you see a sprout drop its shell. I always leave the tray on for the first week until they grow a taproot thru the bottom bcuz the seedlings like a little humidity. then I bury em.
