Who here listens to jazz? It's my favorite genre, and I love to play it on guitar or trumpet. My favorite guy is miles, but diz, bird, clifford, wes and red are awesome. I'm in a combo atm and I play guitar for it. I'm playing at the Berkley Jazz Fest in Feb and I hope i win.
all of it. Some of my favorites are: Bill Frisell, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Bill Evans, Paul Motian, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, SF Jazz Collective, Joshua Redman, John Scofield, Kenny Garrett, Brad Mehldau, Michael Brecker, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Monk, Herbie, Miles, Coltrane, Freddie, Terence Blanchard, Stefon Harris, Guillermo Klein, Adam Rogers, Chick Corea, Sonny Rollins, Roy Hargrove/RH Factor, Aaron Parks, Ornette Coleman, Mike Moreno, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Kenny Barron, Medeski, Martin & Wood, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Joey Baron, Joe Lovano, Geoffrey Keezer, Eric Harland, Dave Holland, Branford Marsalis, Ron Carter, Avishai Cohen, so many more. This gives you a good idea of my taste.
Guitar is my life. I spend all my time practicing, playing, gigging, teaching, and listening. I Also play Piano, Bass and just started fooling around with a hand-me-down tenor sax trying to make noise come out.
Trying to figure out the sax, eh shalom? It's fun, but has its own quirks like any instrument. Have you heard of the tenor player Jimmy Greene? He's played with Avishai Cohen (bass player) a lot, and he started teaching at my school this year. Really nice guy, and a killin player.
Haha, yeah I totally suck balls at it. Kinda hard to pick it up with no wind playing experience other than melodica. Haven't heard of him, i'll check him out.
After watching a Return to Forever show in the 80's, I gave up trying to play jazz, because I suck at it, but I do love to hear the good guys play. What a lineup, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola and Lenny White...I was trembling when I walked out, I thought I should just give up trying to play at all. They scared me! So many notes, so fast! I couldn't keep up with that! Anyone here ever been so awed that you considered just giving up? It's always the Jazz and Progressive Fusion guys that do it to me. But the only way to be a genius is to show everyone else up, so do it to me, put that swing on it, Kill me with a sweet tone, Trane style, Bird like, Ella-lucious, Count your blessings, and Duke it to me again. The music of my fathers generation sounds good to me today, Jazz is the great american interpretation of life in the moment. Be dop dop doo! Larry Coryell, Charles Mingus, Joe Zawinul, Thelonius Monk, Jaco Pastorius, The Breckers, The Crusaders, Bill Laswell, Miles, Mahavishnu Orchestra, RTF, to say nothing of the singers, Ella, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, the true divas. MMmmmm, tasty just thinking about them.
Al, have you heard Stanley Clarke's self-titled cd? It has Tony Williams on drums, Jan Hammer on keys, and Bill Connors on guitar. What a fucking amazing fusion album.
