OK so today i was at my aunts house, in the back yard i found a badly dehydrated but still living jade plant! it is about 2 feet tall and two feet wide the thing must be like 10 years old. My aunt however hadnt been taking care of it so i brought it home put some new potting soil in the pot and am now in the proccess of bringing it back to life!

I am pretty new to gardening, i picked up the hobby because my interest in Cannabis has spread to an interest in all plants (and im not in a position to grow my own right now so i can at least practice with some other plants lol)!

So heres my question; i want to take a cutting off of it, ive been doing some google research about taking cuttings from a jade plant and everything i have read says to use cuttings that are 3-4 inches, i have plenty of small branches that meet that criteria, but there is one branch in particular that has my eye! It is about a foot long and has a couple smaller branches coming off of it. Would it be any different if i took a cutting that is already 12 inches tall, will it grow roots just as well as a 3-4 inch cutting?
there is a few branches that size on the Bigger branch i want to chop but i would rather have one 12 in jade cutting than a couple 4 inch ones.. well if any one has any advice/ suggestions for me its greatly appreciated!!

  2. Smaller is better when taking cuttings. They root easier and will produce a much more vigorous cutting. Take a cutting with 3-4 nodes, strip the leaves on the lower 1-2 nodes and plant in well drained soil. Keep the soil uniformly moist, but not waterlogged.

  3. Jade is easy to propagate. Smaller is probably easier, but you'd be fine with a big branch. Break off a branch and put in a glass of water. It will(should) root.

You can even break of a single leaf and put it on soil and it should sprout roots and start growing. I put my 60+ year old jade plants out on my deck during the summer. Branches/leafs broke off and I have a bunch of jade plants growing in the dirt under my deck.

  4. thanks for the info guys! i ended up taking 3 cuttings each between 2-4 inches! im excited to see what happens! i also took four individual leaves that i set out to see if i can get those to root as well!

  5. dont know much about jade myself but i want to caution you on your newfound interest in all plants, thats what i did too and now im persuing a career growing plants, fungi and livestock together in all natural systems based on the way nature does thing without outside inputs... you never know where your path of knowledge will lead you!

    lol
