Issue with first dwc grow

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by Klienta, Jun 18, 2023.

  1. Hi people, I have issue with a plants im growing. For several days leaves are aways drooping, growth is much slower and one of the leaves is dying. Water ph is 5.8, water temp is between 18~22 Celsius.
Here are some pics if it helps. Please if anyone knows what might be it to share.

  2. What are you using for nutrients and what’s the ec or ppm? Are you aerating the bucket?
it looks to me like there’s not enough oxygen in the root zone.
if your roots reach the nutrient solution I would get rid of the top watering ring. It’s hard to tell from the picture how much air space there is between the lid and the nutrient solution. I usually leave 5-6 inche air gap.

  3. Im using advanced nutrients ph perfect - micro, grow, bloom with additives. I use their nuts calculator in the site but do half doses. Currently is 1lm/l of base and 0.5ml/l of additives. Ppm shows as 1200 but thats after few ph balances, the original ppm before balance was about 700-750ppm.
For the air im using a large air stone in container.
The plant roots still does not reach the water and are not showing from bottom of the pot.
Here is a pic of water level.
Between top of water and bottom of tray there is about 2 santimeter or a bit less then 1 inch (1 inch about 2.4cm).
Now see other leaves starting to die as well.

  4. Btw the coco where i germinated the seed and transplant to hydro looks like this. Think this is not normal?

  5. So by what your are saying I understand that it overwaters constantly, is that correct?

  6. Yes, that’s what I’m thinking. Maybe try bringing the water level up so the bottom of the tray is submerged a cm or two and turn off the ring? I’ve had a similar problem with rockwool staying saturated when hand watering dwc starts.

  7. Two days ago I stopped the ring but left on the airstone, waited about 24h to dry up. The plants was still drooping and leaves dying. So yesterday I stopped the airstone as well because I think its keeping the bottom part of the tray too wet and drowning the roots. So now about 12h after stopping everything, I think the plant starting to bounce back - the leaves starting to not droop. Now Im thinking to lower the water level and turn on the stone again, maybe tomorrow.

  8. I think you are underfeeding! Try bumping up to 75%+ on your nutrients. Then go to 100% with the following reservoir change. Those lower yellow leaves look like Nitrogen deficiency to me. You can also lower your water level to keep from saturating the rock wool!
