is total darkness for 4 days a bad idea?

    I have to leave and go out of town and im paranoid that if i leave all my lights on that something is going to go terribly wrong and some electrical fire will start and my house is going to burn down.

    so.. im going to turn my lights off and unplug them til i get back.

    I have several plants that I wanted to start flowering anyways. So i figure if the lights go off for a few days then it will just be a good transition into flowering and maybe the worse thing is that the plants will stretch and maybe wilt a bit. But then again im not sure.

    Tell me if im going to kill these plants.. or stress the shit out of them by doing this.

    (ps. theyre currently growing under about 1500w worth of CFLs for 24/7.)

    CFLs dont put out much heat at all, they wouldn't burn down your house :p but i can understand where you're coming from so if you do end up turning them off for 4 days they should be fine once you come back and let them recover...

    ..Although it might stress them into hermies? I'm not actually sure on that one..

    While I personally don't recommend it, there is a practice of killing the light for 72 hrs between your veg and flower so I don't see how an extra day will do much more damage. What you want to do is plan on a straight watering just before you leave.

    thanks for the advice. I guess ill just see what happens. Ill will post an update when I get back and let everyone how it went.

    Let me ask you: do you live in your house, even sleep in your house, when the lights are running? If so, why would you be more afraid of the house burning down without you in it than you would be while you are in it?

    If my house ever burns down I sure hope I'm away when it happens. I am out of town for four days right now, my third road trip in three weeks, and my plants are staying on cycle with light timers no problem. I just raise the lights a tad in case the plants grow up while I'm gone.

    Are you still vegging? If so then 4 days of dark will trigger flower whether you are ready or not. The only time I would do 4 days of dark is the very end of flower when ready to harvest, even 4 days is too long to trigger flowering, 36 hours is about all I would do for that.

    I put mine through a 36 hour dark period before I started flower. to be honest I didn't care for it, it seemed to weaken my girls, took a few days to make em happy again. if your system has been running fine for a few weeks you should be alright, if you have a legitimate fire hazard you need to take care of that, you don't want to cook yourself in your sleep.
