Is this true?

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by Like2Toke, Jan 27, 2010.

  1. This guy told me that mmj has 5x the carcinogens (idk if thats spelled right, the stuff that causes cancer I guess) anyway is this true?

  2. He is full of shit.

...and you can quote me on that...

  3. When i got my MMJ card the Doc told me use a vaporizer or edibles. The Doc also said that some of the newer studies show that smoking the herb causes some of the same problems, cancer and aging/wrinkling of the skin as smoking tobacco.

  4. It does contain many of the same carcinogens, yet it has never been scientifically linked to causing lung cancer.
“There have been many studies on the toxicity of tobacco smoke. It is known that tobacco smoke contains 4000 chemicals of which 60 are classed as carcinogens. Cannabis in contrast has not been so well studied. It is less combustible than tobacco and is often mixed with tobacco in use. Cannabis smoke contains 400 compounds including 60 cannabinoids. However, because of its lower combustibility it contains 50% more carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including naphthalene, benzanthracene, and benzopyrene, than tobacco smoke.”

Note that they do not say that it DOES cause cancer, only that it MAY cause cancer.

Hell, even if it does it is still better than the effects of tobacco and alcohol, and I'm not going to stop tokin any time soon, who wants to be 90 anyway?

  5. One more thing, you can always type your questions into google, and I'll even give you a link :).

Google Search: Marijuana + Lung Cancer

  6. haha that guy that told you is a big bullshitter. hes probably an alcoholic that hates "dope fiends" there has never been one directly linked case between smoking mj and getting cancer

  7. Smoking marijuana has never been linked to cancer, If anything it prevents cancer, there are multiple studies that show this.

  8. I heard the same thing. I think it's true, but I don't yet have all the studies committed to memories. Regardless though, marijuana hasn't been linked to cancer. Don't worry about it, this is actually a plant thats good for you.

  9. Hon, we did this "dance" about 6 months ago. Read this thread- especially comment #27.

There's more under "Cancer- lung" and "Cancer- Risk Tobacco vs cannabis" and also the section "Safety" in my "Granny Storm Crow's MMJ Reference list" (linked in my sig below). You might want to share these with the dude, so he can get his facts right. :p

    Granny

  10. :hello:

    Your the best Granny <3

  11. If anything, Medical Mary Jane is less likely to cause cancer because you get more of an "Effect" from smoking(ingesting) even less quantity than you would with Reggie Bush or some Decent homegrown...
Therefore, you can get the same benefits from doing only half the amount
GOTTA LOVE that GOOD WEED logic

  12. 5 times the carcinogens of what, exactly? Pop-Tarts? Car exhaust? Lady Gaga?

It's hard to know how to answer an incomplete question. It's also funny that so many people will try to, by making assumptions.

They've all assumed the OP was talking about carcinogens in recreational tobacco, vs. those in smoked medical cannabis, but there is nothing in the original post to draw that conclusion from.

    So I'll just say...

Orally consumed cannabis has no carcinogenic effects at all.

In the future, please try to be more specific, and never ever believe anything, just because some 'guy' tells you to.

  13. Lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

THC has been found to reduce tumor growth in common lung cancer by 50 percent and to significantly reduce the ability of the cancer to spread, say researchers at Harvard University, who tested the chemical in both lab and mouse studies. The researchers suggest that THC might be used in a targeted fashion to treat lung cancer.[71]
In 2006, Donald Tashkin, of the University of California in Los Angeles, presented the results of his study, Marijuana Use and Lung Cancer: Results of a Case-Control Study. Tashkin found that smoking marijuana does not appear to increase the risk of lung cancer or head-and-neck malignancies, even among heavy users. The more tobacco a person smoked, the greater their risk of developing lung cancer and other cancers of the head and neck. But people who smoked more marijuana were not at increased risk compared with people who smoked less and people who didn't smoke at all.[72] Marijuana use was associated with cancer risk ratios below 1.0, indicating that a history of marijuana smoking had no effect on the risk for respiratory cancers. In contrast, tobacco smoking had a 21-fold risk for cancer. Tashkin concluded, "It's possible that tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana smoke may encourage apoptosis, or programmed cell death, causing cells to die off before they have a chance to undergo malignant transformation".[73][74]
Wan Tan presented a study at the American Thoracic Society 2007 International Conference showing that smoking marijuana and tobacco together more than tripled the risk of developing Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) over just smoking tobacco alone.[75]
Similar findings were released in April 2009 by the Vancouver Burden of Obstructive Lung Disease Research Group. The study presents that smoking both tobacco and marijuana synergistically increased the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD. Smoking only marijuana, however, was not associated with an increased risk of respiratory symptoms of COPD.[76][77] In a related commentary, Tashkin writes, "…we can be close to concluding that marijuana smoking by itself does not lead to COPD".[78]
    got this off wiki.

  14. I like this method best if longer lasting effects desired (takes an hour to hit and lasts 3 to 4 hours with an another hour of coming down). But I find you have to injest (eat) more of your expensive buds than if you were to smoke it (I wouldn't care if I was allowed to grow my own). When I eat pot, I need anywhere from 2 grams to 4 grams to get a decent buzz. When I use pure synthetic THC, I need to dose 40mg to get where I want to be (I guess I'm a stoner). If I am smoking a joint, I only need 400mg or less of mids (250mg BC skunk) to give you an idea of my tolerance.

Anyhow, here's some ways I like to eat weed in the past (I used to have a card to grow when I used to live in Canada as I have AIDS):

    • dry half gram per cookie with some kind of oil, make a bunch
add some fresh buds to salad, olive oil helps your absorb more THC
add buds to a beef stew, texture of buds will amaze you, its like meat
just eat some fresh buds freshly cut of plant
make extract tincture to spray on your tongue, takes 10 mins to feel effects
flake crumbled/cut weed over a pizza

  15. ive never thought about eating raw weed, especially in stew or salad. When my plants are done im going to have to try this. +Rep
