Is this rootbound? *With Pics*

  1. Is this rootbound? Is it time for a larger pot? I have several plants and 3 of them appear to be suffering from overwatering but the others are looking good I think. This one is the worst looking one I have. Could it also be wilting because it needs a bigger pot?

  2. Do your party cups have drainage? Looks more like under/over watering to me, however with those cups, its good to transplant before 2 weeks is up.
The roots could look worse, but very close to bound.

  3. Yes I have 5 holes, 1/4" each in the bottom of the cups. I have posted some previous pics on the site and everyone is pretty sure it's due to over watering. I have doubts that I am, but these guys know worlds more than I do so if they say it's over watering then so be it.

The plants are 15 days old today. They have been watered 3 times. No Nutes.

Looking at the pics the soil looks wet. It is not. It is just the slightest bit moist. Barely damp and cool at the bottom, and dry to the touch on top.

  4. How often are you watering?
Yea, its time to transplant those.

  5. Plant looks fine but yes over watered.I think if there wasn't any moisture stress happening your plant would have grown a little healthier/bigger/.MJ especially the first 10 days from seed dont need much watering in a good medium. And that rootball would have covered more area than in the pics you posted.Too me that doesn't look root bound yet.I start seeds in 20 oz. cups and usually transplant in 12 to 15 days.

If i were you i would go ahead and transplant and give the plant a light feeding. You probably wont see much change for a few days but once the plant gets over a little transplant stress and adapts to the new medium it should show improvements if other conditions/lighting/temps/ventilation are good.JMO

  6. Transplant for sure. They might not be root-bound but with a plant that size in party cups over watering is too easy. Switch to a 2-3 gallon pot and wait 2 days and if it doesn't look better, no, it will look better, I promise. Just water the soil in new pot before you transfer and don't water it until it's decently dry again.
    Oh and p.s.
Light is bad for roots! Don't take plants out of pots just to take pictures and if you do, make sure you don't damage them putting them back in.
    And p.p.s.
When you transplant, make sure soil is slightly dry so root-ball is entirely intact because broke/damaged roots= x2 if not x3 recovery time.

  7. Watered them 3 times since birth on 4/7. Once they germed I placed them in peat pots (I now know not the best choice) on 4/4. They broke the soil on 4/7. and seemed a little on the dry side so I gave each one about 2 TBSP. dist water.

Watered again on 4/12 when they were transplanted to the party cups (15 oz.) On 4/13 in the evening they looked a bit wilted.

By 4/15 everything was looking very good. Growing well showing nice leaf growth. A bright lime green color.

Watered again on 4/20. This time the dirt was very dry down to about 1.5 inches. The soil actually had begun to shrink away from the cup wall. So I placed each party cup in a large bowl to catch overflow and watered each with 8 oz. dist water no nutes. I let them sit in the bowl for about 3-5 minutes in the over flow and then removed them and placed back under the lights.

I dumped the remaining overflow into the 8 oz. measuring cup and topped it off with fresh dist. water and watered the next plant the same way. (This may have been a bad idea because if there was any fert in the soil the run off would have had nutes in it and I watered the next plant with it!)

Now they look wilted and the seedling leaves are yellowed and the 1st leaves are a lighter green.

  8. Ok! Here is the gameplan! After reading luckyleaf2 and qubed55 advice (+rep to both of you for the good advice) I have transplanted them into 1.32 liter/1.4 quart pots (thats all I had) and used a minimal amount of water. I will get some 3 gallon pots tomorrow and put them in those and feed them with a 20-20-20 at 1/4 strength. Sound ok?

  9. Guess my advice was no good? lol
Too young for ferts imo, even at 1/4th.

  10. did anyone just hear something? :poke:

FYI, i've had plants go double that size in a party cup, of course the spin out is way thicker when i transplanted, I'd say anony was on the dot, I'm betting you watered a little too frequently.

  11. Lol! No thats not it at all dude! Your advice is always great! You have already helped me in the past week or two like 3 times! But you still had some watering questions so I thought you were gonna pontificate a bit longer before throwing down some knowledge. Lol!

  12. So no fert just yet then? You think less water and bigeer pots will straighten em out? When is it good to start ferts at 1/4 or 1/5th?

  13. water when the soil is almost dry

I actualy wait untill they wilt a little before I water, you can do it by feel, when it feels "light" its time to water, every 3 days or so depending on the % humidity

give her ferts when she wants em! or at least wait till you have 3 nodes (3 sets of leafs)

they can run for a long time on plain old H20

and... make sure you use LUCAS formula, cuz its so easy, i mean EASY.. lol

  14. Lol just givin ya a hard time ;)

Personally I would wait until you hit the one month mark in age before giving ferts, this will allow you to see how it reacts with the bigger pots, get it over the shock of transplant, and give you time to dial in waterings.
1/4th should be fine at first, have you already picked out a brand?

  15. Hi Anony. Not debating with ya just disagreing.

From his pics that plant has no vigor. At 15 days he has almost went through half of his veg stage.

Hexter that 20.20/20 is a decent nute for just a store bought soil.If im correct i think it also has most of the micro and trace elements also??

Thays the fert i used a long time ago when i first started out oriwing.Worked well. But does have a high NPK so if you do decide to fert go light with a 1/4 per gallon mix.And if you have already repoted dont do it tommorow when you get the bigger containers.Just grow them in the container you just transplanted to.That will be fine until they are ready agian.

Its always good to prepare before germing the seeds./containers/nutriants/timer etc.

  16. Its not how much water you give the plants that causes moisture stress its how often you water. When you water just make sure you saturate the soil(to assure no dry spots)and have a good runoff from the bottom of the container.

But if it were me i would feed that plant.JMO

  17. Ok, so I will wait on the nutes. I am glad to wait cuz I was gonna have to use MG if I was gonna fert tomorrow. Yes Im gonna use Fox Farms line and there flow chart. I will just finish the transplant and wait and see what happens with them before I go to nutes. Should I wait a few days to go from the pots I just planted in or just get it over with to the 3-5 gal pots?

  18. LMAO! Lucky you posted when I writing my last. What to do, what to do!! You all seem to know what your talking about! Ok so I will wait on the 2nd transplant, water when totally dry and hold off on the nutes if I can until my FF arrives?

  19. You have a few folks giving you advise so it will be up to you on how you go from here.I just gave you advise from my past experience growing in soil.So trial and error is something you will learn from while gaining more and more experience with every grow.

I will bookmark this thread and see how this turns out.

If you are having problems deciding what to do i suggest you read a few threads that members post with pics and the steps they take with there grow and do some comparing from there pics and plant stages.

Anyway hope everything works out for ya.

  20. Awesome lucky! Thanks for taking an interest! I am now under your leaf! lol! Yeah I have been reading a lot of the threads on this site. I seem to get a little confused though because some stuff that could be going wrong seems very similar to other things it could be and I just don't have the "eye" for it just yet.

What I am gonna do is sit tight for the next 48 hours and watch them. I transplanted them tonight so I wanna give them some time to recover before I do anything. Then depending on if there has been any change,or none I will make a decision then as to what to do next. If I do decide to feed them I will feed 3-4 of them and just water the rest and see if they respond. I will def keep things posted with pics and maybe the next guys can see from what I have learned.
