Yeah, that will work fine. I use mine upside down, with no problems. I think that warning is regarding accidental breakage and the crap inside leaking out. Could be wrong though. In regards to your question, the lights are Compact Flourescent Bulbs (CFLs) They put out the equivalent light of an incandescent (regular) light bulb, but use a fraction of the electricity. For example, a 100w CFL puts out the same light as a standard 100w bulb, but uses only about 26 watts of power. They work well for growing because they put out good light with very little heat.
