Duct tape works great, just cut the width appropriately. Athletic tape, black electrical tape or medical tape will all work fine. Scotch tape will work if you don't have anything else.
Make sure there's no holes where bugs can get in. Sometimes beetles will bore down into the damage and then it would really be hurting.
It will grow a big lump and be even stronger, since i have a bunch of the foil duct tape laying around i use it i cut it in a V shape makes taping easier imo..
