Ok, so I'm using a grow tent in my closet (20' x 36 x 64') from HTG and my only worry is ventilation. I will have one 6' inline fan running air through my 400 HPS bulb, have a 6' exhaust at the top of my tent blowing through a carbon scrubber, and possibly another 4' inline fan at the bottom for intake. Other then that, i'd have an oscillating fan (or two) outside of the tent to refresh the air in the closet/my room. I was also thinking of a cool tube but I don't know much about em. Would three inline fans be overkill inside the tent? or not enough...?? I'm really trying to stay away from ducting a fan to my attic or through a wall...the location of my room/closet makes it impossible. Is there any way around this? Please tell me yes I feel like this growing thing just isn't working out for me Sorry for making stupid noob threads but I want to finally fkin grow!
You've got a carbon can and a 6" vortex fan for it, suck air from the tent into the carbon can to scrub smell from the air. You can also find odor gels that have a smell of fresh linen (works well). Use a combination to do the job. Here is one without odor... No exhaust, no holes, and you will not smell the herb.
THANK YOU! Nice, so you think the cooltube wouldnt even be necessary? And you're saying I wont have to use any ducting into the attic, walls, etc. and I can have my complete set up mostly in the tent, with suitable temps right? Just to re-clarify, i'm a bit too stoned You didn't mention the actual temperature part which worries me more then smell.
bump, any comment on the ventilation aspect? I know the smell will be fine with a 6' inline and a carbon can, as I mentioned I am more worried about temps getting too high from the 400 watt HPS, so any comments on that is all I need to start growing. I want to make sure I have answers to all of my questions before I start this wonderful hobby
You can place some gel (in a cup) in the exhaust to help remove any stray odor from the carbon filter. As to the cool tube, it depends on the temps the tent reaches. Do some test with fan speeds....with a bit of tweaking, you will find the right balance
i only grow using an indoor producer box. it cost me around $2k, (bought from bcnorthernlights.com) but paid for itself in the first 6 weeks I owned it. you definitely need proper ventilation to avoid mold buildup in your house which can kill you.
Hey Retro. Cranking up the AC is your only option really, if you don't exhaust out of your closest. You mentioned in your other post that you have a AC vent in the closet you'll be growing in so that will help for sure. But the problem is all that hot air vents into the closet and then your tent will just suck that hot air back in... making it hotter and the cycle just continues. Also, your house AC is will not constantly be running, it cycles on and off to the temperature you set. I live in a desert where temps reach 110+ for consecutive days... and even if I set my thermostat to 60... the AC cycles off and on. I ran the exact setup you're asking about for a while. 400W HPS inside a 2'' cabinet, that was inside a closet with a AC vent. It works, but heat becomes a limiting factor. After a couple years I decided to vent into the attic and omg... what a difference. I mean, night and day. Temps went down and the noise went down. (Those fans can be a quite noisy for a bedroom, I'd suggest you put the fans in the attic too) If you don't feel comfortable patching drywall then I say... just give it a go and see how it works for you. If the temps are manageable then you're lucky, run with it. However, my bet is that your grow room will benefit from exhausting into another room. Just my 2c. Hope this helps.
You don't necessarily have to cut holes and vent through the wall/floor/ceiling. If the tent is in a room or closet, you could vent straight into that space. But...this is all dependent on how big that space is, what kind of ventilation it gets, and temp control. For example, if the tent is in a closet not much bigger than the tent, and you want to keep it closed up, then your intake is drawing from the same cramped space that your exhaust is going to, which will build heat and won't get fresh air to the plants. But if the tent is in a room or in a large closet that you won't close off then a good chance you can intake and exhaust into the room.
thanks man, the closet is roughly say 4x as big as the grow tent...and the temps in the closet are 70-76 so with an exahust, air cooled hood, etc. I think I should be okay.. I would just leave it in my room to make things easier but I then need to conceal the grow tent somehow...maybe if I cut out an old dresser or something...+ rep smoove btw thanks for the additional help does a 400 HPS seems good for 4 plants, 100 watts each?
Absolutely, you can grow 4 plants under a 400W HPS no problem. But once you get started you'll have a better idea of how the plants respond to the conditions you've created and it'll be much easier for you to gage how many plants are suitable for your space and style of growing. (as a reference, I like to only grow 1-2 plants in the same size space) Typically the more plants you run in a small space, the less time you'll have to veg. If you wait too long before switching them over to flower, they will get too large and overgrow your space which is not ideal. On the flip side, if you run 1 plant you should veg a bit longer in order to grow the plant out and fully maximize your space. You said you need this to be stealth? So I'm guessing you're putting this grow tent inside of your bedroom walk-in closet? Just something to consider... Your 400W light can grow large, healthy and strong smelling plants. You'll need a good scrubber. Also Inline fans can be quite noisy and it's not the actual motor or fan blades that are usually noisy, it's the friction from air movement that can get loud. You'll see what I mean once you get yourself setup. Few questions for you if you don't mind answering: Do you own or rent the house? Are you doing Hydro or Soil? How hot does it get in the Summer months in your area? (temp & humidity)
Hey smoove thanks for all the answers + rep fo sho 1) Parents own the house, however they approved a small grow tent in my walk in closet so, while i'm still investing in a carbon scrubber, smell isn't too much of an issue... 2) FF Organic Soil cause i've heard good things about it, and i'm trying to make this a 100% organic grow hopefully... 3) From the NE so average temps are from 75-85 and humidity anywhere from 30-85%, which can definitely be harmful. But my house should be much less humid and i'm sure the a/c will be left at on 68 or something around there for a good portion of the day. I think i'm gonna go with 1-2 plants as you mentioned, take really good care of them(have some more room too, can't hurt), veg them a bit longer, and get a nice yield hopefully As for strain, i'm thinking of growing either Iced Grapefruit from Fem seeds or Barneys LSD fem, as I believe both have pretty short flowering times and are not the hardest to grow.
Kinda skimmed through most of the pots I bolded whats most relevant to your question lol I have a 2x2x5.3 tent, 4" exhaust fan, 4" carbon fiber filter, 250w hps with some daylight cfls. To get cool air into my tent and increase my humidity, I have 2 duct hoses going from the socks in the tent to my humidifiers, where they are taped to the top. I just fill the humidifier with cold water, and occasionally ice cubes. It works really well for me. Keeps my temps low, can control my humidity levels pretty well, and no smell I should also mention that mine is also in a walk-in closet. I keep my door ajar a bit to allow room air to circulate in. I have a window fan, with 2 fans, each with an intake/exhaust setting. I use that to circulate air in/out of my room. Also... I am using FF Ocean Forest, and I like it a lot, low maintenance. Their nutes are also good, or at least Grow Big. My autos loved it. However, I am fairly certain I will be going with coco fiber next grow. I will also not be growing autos
I ran smack into the ventilation problem when I built my box into a closet... not enough air circulation into a large enough room. The closet would simply heat up and then the temp inside the box would skyrocket. I ended up picking up a A/C unit off of ebay for a local pick up steal (100 bucks for a new 14,000 btu monster) Im planning on keeping the closet at 70 to ensure my box stays right around 80. When it really comes down to it, your not going to know until you try... and even when you think you have accounted for all of the variables, you wont have. Its a learning process... god knows I didnt plan on having to buy an A/C unit when I first designed my box. You can check out my setup in my sig, it may be similar to yours.
