is the sex of the plant predetermined?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Outdoors' started by popsson, Jun 27, 2006.

  1. or do certain factors increase the chances of your plant being male or female

  2. yea under optimum conditions the plant should turn female (weather, humidity, water...etc)

    if the plant gets to stressed, it will turn male.

  3. The seed banks charge a premium for feminised seeds, which will be females. So presumably sex is predetermined. How much of a money back guarantee on this they give, I do not know.

    I am led to believe that stress, especially root stress, can turn a female hermie.

    But I must say that in many years of outdoor growing I have yet to have a hermie.

  4. ur gooooood:hello::hello:

  5. :smoking: In all honesty there is NO WAY a seed supply company can make a 100% promise that you will in fact will get nothing but female seeds...the chances are higher of getting female seeds if a 'female plant' is aloud to go to seed rather than a hermie......as far as growing from seed goes you can increase it's chances of becomming a female with cooler temps,and more blue light........

    Hopes this helps .

  6. Yes, but the seeds are sold as being feminised, so they are genetically predetermined to be female. They are produced by making a female plant produce pollen, using gibberelic acid, which will be female pollen. That is the theory, anyway.

    I think the jury will always be out on this one. It is an old perennial.

  7. I beleive feminized seeds come from hermies, and they are guarenteed not to be male, however they CAN become hermies or females. Not 100% on this, but i remember reading about it somewhere.

  8. MMmm I read what you say. But does ANY seed bank give a money back guarantee that all its seeds will turn out female?? I do not think so. Until they do I won´t buy feminised seeds, not at those prices.

  9. i believe that is acurate. i think its the same ratio 1:1 hermies to female. which seems like a waste of time to me

  10. I had a feminised seed just mold on me during germing- the rest turned out fine that weren't feminised

  11. Feminized seeds are rediculously overpriced i think, but the fact that you might get hermies means you can seperate all the hermies from females, and use them to get your own feminized seeds =] So it's worth the cash if its a good strain, and you plan to grow the year after.
