Is Reality Common?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by Dopethrone420, Feb 6, 2011.

  1. Do we all share one reality or does each individual inhabit one reality? For example what if what you see as brown is seen by everybody else as a crazy-ass shade of pink? Everything that you see as brown (idk what) is seen as pink but called brown by everybody else. Therefore somebody else's reality could be completely different from yours with neither of you even knowing. But what if you were schizo? If you see all this crazy shit as true, but reality is independent, are your schizo visions true reality?

  2. There's obviously a degree of subjectivity to our perceptions, but I think an objective reality exists.

  3. But then what forms reality? Collective perception? It is flawed. If that is true then reality must change as history goes on, or else early beliefs would have been reality. Maybe reality is objective to the majority in the observer's temporal position.

  4. Reality is independent of perception, not shaped by it.

  5. Everyone is in their own perception of the true reality. Everyone else has a reality that they perceive as true. We don't gain anything from questioning someone else's reality, just be aware that everyone is different in that way. True reality is who we think we are, so in a sense we all live in a true reality, but different from one anothers idea of true reality.

Think of the Earth traveling through space, no humans, cars, citys, nothing but Earth. You are on that Earth and can do anything you want in your reality. But keep in mind that there are other humans, cars, and citys.

  6. Lol this thread brings me back to my sid daze.

I like to think of reality as the majority. The fact that you see brown instead of crazy-ass pink just makes you unique. What is the color really? Well, I concluded that reality is an illusion ;)

  7. when someone runs through a wall maybe i'll start thinking that reality is subjective- but until then i'll be sure to open the door first

  8. Reality is an individual sense... But not in the sense your percieving it... But in the sense that no one will fully understand or begin to understand someone else or what goes on in thier heads.. Everyone sees and takes hapening their own way.. You can physically see a robotic world in front of you.. And see people as androids.. Its when you start to question your reality you begin to lable yourself sick..

I think people misinterpret what reality means, or maybe I have just have a different definition. I always thought it was basically seen as the here and the now. The processes, routines, tasks we do that make up our daily life and the meanings for why we continue to do these things. Ex. 'Reality': We need a job, because thats our means of money (which fuels our survival on Earth as people in this society).
But its really just an illusion that our mind creates, because as humans we feel we need to serve a purpose in life.
True reality: The world has been around for billions of years. The entire time span of human existence is relatively new to our Earth when looking at a timescale of it's entire lifespan. To think of ourselves or anything we do as truly important to anything at all is really just that urge to have a purpose in life. In time, our entire species will be nothing more than just a distant speck in Earth's history. The world will once again start rebuilding life, but much different than before. The surviving animals will evolve to better suit the new world. Plants would be changed and everything. Earth basically hits the reset button. And its happened before, many times in the past.
Always makes me wonder, what if 10 million years ago there was a society even more advanced than our own that met this same inescapable fate. Right now history findings disagree with that, but thats crazy to not at least count it as probable. After all, there is many things on this Earth that shatter the very theories that try to explain them.
Way off topic haha too high right now
Back to the question, I dont think reality in an individual sense in common. We all live very different lives and our views can vary greatly. There is still even tribes in Africa of hunter-gathers that have had very little contact with the outside world. Can you imagine how they perceive reality? lol pretty crazy to think about
But there are seven emotions that no matter where you are from, what language you speak, culture you are, etc can be understood by every human. Anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, happiness, contempt. something else to think about...:smoke:

edit: +rep for this thread dude. last week I had to come up with a philosophical yes/no question to write an essay on for my philosophy class. I was gonna use some legalization shit for it, but im tired of marijuana essays and reports. 'Is reality common?' simple question, yet very complex answer haha perfect for an essay
