Is just mulch ok?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Outdoors' started by jimbo lahey, May 15, 2011.

  1. Say i wanted to move the medical operation to the garden next to vegetables and such to save on power. The soil is on the clayish side but damn good stuff with a ton of worms. Can i just loosen the soil about a foot down and mix a bunch of store bought mulch into it. Or would i need anything else? Id like to only spend money if i have to. The climate is definitely on the wet side if that matters.

  2. ohjeeze.
i shaved earlier without a shirt on, and now my chest really itches guys.

  3. Mulch is (can be) acidic. On top it's ok, but in direct contact of the roots it may burn the plant.
Buy some perlite and vermiculite (mix a volume of 30% to the total of the plant's space).
Also lava rock chips air out the soil. But if there's worms and you got veggies there it'll be fine withou anything too but extra airing out is important for big mj plants.
You can add some branches and some lighter loamy soil if available (free). But perlite or vermic is the surest and easiest (1 thing to add only, no burn issue).

I thought the mulch was supposed to air out the soil and create good drainage? Its black forest organic stuff. Basically what we have available is the clayish soil with all the worms, a big bag of black forest organic mulch that says it has a ton of good stuff in it, a wet climate, a bunch of gravel rocks, perlite, and blackberry bushes nearby that are dead and alive from pruning.

    What would you do?

  5. im pretty sure mulch will retain the water so probably not the best idea in a wet climate. id go with perlite for that airy like soil!
