Is it safe to grow under a house?

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by greenberry94, Dec 30, 2012.

  1. As far as "safe" i mean as safe as growing can be, of course. I have searched a bunch for any info on this idea. I am considering a small grow op underneath my house but I am concerned with a few things.
First, the last thing I want is my house to burn down.
Second, I'm not sure how to get a standard electrical outlet under there without a cord trail. Obviously, stealth is very important.
Third, it's winter. I think the temperature will even out because of the lights, but I dont know. I was thinking about using a rubbermaid grow box to help trap warmth. My local weather has been fluctuating quite a bit, ranging from 32 to 55 degrees F a day, so I dont know if ill be able to maintain the temp.

I was thinking about using fluoros the whole time because of my first concern. I can deal with a lesser yield if it means my house doesnt burn down. But then there is much less heat to handle my third concern.

  2. If you don't have a basement how are you going to have enough height? what kind of space do you have to work with?

  3. You want to grow under your house in a rubbermaid box, without any form of climate control, in the middle of winter?

You will have to have a heater. You cannot run a heater in a rubbermaid box without burning your house down. Underground, it stays cold. 32f with flouros is only going to be about 35f in that box.

  4. Thats exactly what i was looking for. Thanks!

  5. If you're going to grow in a rubbermaid box, why bother doing it underground? Put that shit in your bedroom and stack a couple more storage ones on top or something. Temps will basically already be regulated, you can put CFL's and grow a single plant in one pretty well with just a couple PC fans and a DIY carbon filter.

  6. Well I wanted to do it without parental intervention (living with parents for a semester, no fun) and under the house was one of the stealthiest places i could think of but I've recently decided to talk about it with them. Better all around, since its their house I guess I should try to get permission.

  7. ^^^^ definitely talk to them first.
