Is it possible to make racism illegal?

Discussion in 'Politics' started by Sir Breach, Dec 2, 2008.

  1. I hate racism more than almost anything. It's pointless, mean, and despicable.

I was reading on Wikipedia about the Turner Diaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turner_Diaries) after watching a show about the book on the History Channel. Apparently this book sparked a movement of its own, resulting in a black minister being dragged behind a truck in Texas.

I am also worried about a crazy racist trying to kill Barack Obama. Is there a way to make racism illegal, or to make some task force that works on wiping out their organizations? Or is free speech simply too much of a blanket amendment?

    Oh christ...

Racism is just a belief. You can't legislate it away without creating more racism, as hate crime laws have done, you have to let it go away organically.

The Turner Diaries is just a book. It didn't make anyone kill anyone, and no doubt those people already would have wanted to kill a black minister regardless of what any book says.

And be careful what you wish for. As the republicans are now finding out the hard way, any government establishment you create can be turned against you at a moment's notice.

edit: wait, task force? The anti-racism brigade? Do you not realize the irony there?

The way some of you people talk about racism you'd think it were worse than rape or murder. Ideas and thoughts don't harm anyone.

  3. It is a fundamental right to be allowed to hate whoever you wish for whatever reason you wish, of course no one should psychically act on it, but prohibiting racism is on par with prohibiting marijuana. It will never work and will definitely lead to bigger problems.

  4. people are allowed to be racist, they just cant be racist in ways which would endanger the welfare of others...like the kkk trying to end one of their protests in NYC by walking through harlem

  5. "Racism" = thought-terminating cliche

  6. It sounds like you're saying racism is acceptable.

  7. Racism, as an idea, is acceptable, just as are christianity, libertarianism, nihilism, islam, deconstructionism, conservatism, taoism, etc. Racism as a physical action is not. Ideological and physical racism occasionally meet, but in today's world they're pretty much mutually exclusive.

You've fallen into the same mental trap that conservatives do when they say flag burning should be illegal. You can't ban racism or flag burning without eviscerating what few civil liberties we have left.

Please stop feeding the police state. They love this kind of stuff.

  8. There should be no laws that hold any race higher than another for anything.

The sooner we can stop using race or creed as a way to devide us, the sooner rascism will stop.

This can be said for anything in government also, no class warfare should be embraced.

This means bush unfair tax brakes to the rich and Obama's surplus to middle class are contributors to this class warfare.

The government should not govern on class or race but instead allow the people to govern themselves on this.

People that drag a preacher behind a truck or kill a president should be delt with as they should be, not to do with class or race but vast wrong doing done to that individual.

Just because the action was caused through bigotry does not mean it should be solved with bigotry.

  9. No that would violate free speech.

Making a law to ban racism would be hypocritical anyways.

  10. In addition to the already mentioned points, it wouldn't be possible to effectively stop racism through legislation, de facto racism would still exist and most likely worsen.

  11. What, so now I have a choice between racism and fascism?
