So Ugly Betty has been progressing pretty well, and as of today she's on her 49th day of life! I'm starting to think its about time to switch to 12/12. Her stem is 15 inches, I topped her when she was about 13 inches. As of today I count 14 major potential budsites/colas. Also, I absolutely need a clone off of her, I need to make this strain last a bit longer until I can breed it when I have a larger set up. Here's today's update under the scrog: And here's above: Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum mobile app
The longer you let the plant veg, the larger the harvest in the end. That's basically it. We generally veg ours for at least 2 months AFTER I get them into 1 gallon pots. We start ours (clones) in Solo cups and pot them up as they need it until they're in the size container I plan to flower them in. By doing it this way, it forces the foliage to grow faster. A plant always sets up it's root system first and the smaller the area they have to get established in, the quicker the plant will get back to growing above ground. If you confine the root space, you can get that plant to grow twice as big in the same amount of time it took you to get yours to this size. We start with Solo cups and leave them in them until the plant itself is wider and taller than the cup it's in. This is a good indicator that it's slightly root bound (which is what you want before a transplant or up pot). This usually takes around 7 days or so, and they go into 1 gallon pots next. They grow in those until they are larger than the 1 gallon pots (as above) when we transplant up another size. We veg for 2 months past the up pot and my plants are typically around 3 ft. tall and have many bud sites as I've topped them probably 3 or 4 times while they're vegging. I slap a tomato cage on them and put them into flower and finish them that way. Because we transplant at least 3 times during their life span, little nutrients are required during the veg cycle because with each repot, we get fresh nute supply in the fresh soil. We generally don't have to start any nutes until a week or two before they go into flower. I try to avoid giving my plants a ton of chemicals and try to keep the whole process as natural as possible...without doing an organic grow. It works pretty well. Just an observation, but I don't think that particular strain is what you want to use for a scrog. You need something that grows less bushy so it will fill that screen. This particular strain looks very stocky and bushy and those are often much harder to do a good scrog with. Hey, you live and you learn, huh? Also, the more you grow, the better you get at it. It's definitely not something that happens overnight. I guess it took me a good year before I got really comfortable with taking one from seed/clone to harvest. There is a whole lot more to it than I was led to believe when I first started out. LOL Happy growing! TWW
Thanks for the huge amount of info TWW! I'm going to start the up-potting method you do with me clones starting in solo cups, I might go up one more pot size from where she's at, with all of what you said in mind, I think she's just about ready in a week then? Bushy plants are exactly what you want in a scrog. I scrog. I would not consider your plant a bushy plant though. Very lanky as far as I'm concerned. There's alot of work needed for that plant. I go out of my way to make them bushy like most scrog growers. Whoever says bushy plants arent suited for scrogs is giving false information. That's 1 plant in a 2x4 scrog. You can't help but have a bushy plant in a scrog if done right. The whole point of a scrog is to bush them out flat with an even canopy.
Agreed Killset, when you say she has a lot of work, what would you do to her? I'm not quite sure what to do or how to guide her at this point Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum mobile app
I would of let it grow straight up into the net and then work her out evenly in each direction as opposed to pushing it all to one side. Now it's going to be a pain and take much longer Next time let the plant grow up to the center of the net working its way outwards placing a bud site in each square of the net and keeping it tucked until full and ready to flower
How can I scrog her like you're describing? When would I start and what exactly should I do with the main stem? Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum mobile app
Here's how she's looking this morning by the way And I need to clone this branch, any tips? Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum mobile app
Just like I explained let it grow up into the net and work your way out in all directions. As you bend the plant over the bud sites will grow bigger and push them in to areas where its needed. No need to top or fim. Here's 1 I recently chopped down. Then each of the big branches left had shoots going up to each square. What was left was a bud site in every square
Sounds good Killset, cloned ugly Betty last night, here's her little spawn! Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum mobile app
