Iphone5 vs galaxy s3 and question on NFC

Discussion in 'Tech Talk & Computing' started by Renkluaf, Sep 13, 2012.

  1. Hey guys I am stuck on which one to get, I've had an iphone4 for a year and a half and I rarely get any problems.
I looked at all the reviews and comparisons, and it seems that mostly every feature comes down to personal preference except the galaxy s3 has this feature "NFC - near field communication", I read about it and simply didnt understand it, it's supposed to be a deal breaker but I just don't get it. If anyone knows please share for the stoner world.

I will most likely end up getting the iphone5 but then I have a feeling I will regret not getting the galaxy for reasons I don't even know yet.

  2. Nfc let's you transfer data and files between 2 devices, make pay pass-like payments with your phone, play multiplayer games, and whatever 3rd parties want/can do with it.

Also there's already a iphone vs s3 thread with a poll. Check it out ;)

NFC is kind of like Bluetooth. Only it's lower energy and connects a whole lot faster. However it doesn't send data as fast in some cases. So while both let you connect two devices for file swapping, you'd want to use bluetooth to send/receive files because it will connect slower but transfer the data faster (assuming you have up to date bluetooth). Though you could use NFC for swapping too.

Since NFC connects faster it's good for speedy, low data things. Such as using your phone as a key (for your car for example), or for using your device to make a payment. More and more places are implementing NFC payment options, but it will probably be a while before it's really widespread (though it may already feel widespread to you depending on where you live)

Right now even though NFC is newer, Bluetooth is still kind of ahead in most things. It's faster at sending larger files and it's more secure (they've focused a lot on security). So I don't think lack of NFC should seem like a deal breaker. It might progress enough in a year or two to where it could be seen as a deal breaker... but yeah, right now it's just a neat little feature.

Sooner or later NFC is going to take off though. If you only plan on using your phone for a year, I wouldn't pay too much attention. But if you plan on holding it for 2-3 years then you might want to think about it, if the idea of it interests you, anyway

  4. Also sharing contacts and exchanging bit coins.

  5. I have the S3 and its pretty awesome, its taken tons of falls but the Gorilla Glass 2 is really tough so no scratches or anything. Its extremely fast and customizable. Being able to multi-task is pretty nice seeing as the iPhone 5 can't, and the large screen is amazing on the S3, I'm not sure how the iPhone 5's compares.

They added height to the phone, meaning most app developers will have to develop special versions of their apps to fit the new aspect ratio, which means more paid apps (which means apple gets more app revenue, obviously they changed the aspect ratio on purpose just for this reason). Plus afaik, its still not amoled like the s3

  7. nfc doesnt matter, its not gonna catch on for a few years if it ever does. i think something like 3% of all stores in the world support it.

  8. It has other uses, though.

  9. Nothing bluetooth can't do

Bluetooth is longer range and is easy to hack. Nfc only works up close making it more secure, and pairing devices is quicker than bt

  11. Careful when making claims related to security, for often it is proven to be an illusion

Bluetooth has been proven to connect from 1 kilometer away, and I've seen Wi-Fi pushed over 50 miles.

  12. The thing is that it only works close up.

  13. HTC one x ;) Just to be awkward.

It's actually really hard to spy on Bluetooth transfers. They've put a lot of time into developing security so the newest version is really secure . NFC would be easier to hack... but that will probably change once it gets more popular.

  15. nfc is meh, i wouldnt complain if it had it but i couldnt care less about it

  16. Whats wrong with the phone you have now? Why do you need a new one?

  17. Yeah they made the screen bigger to make more app revenue... it doesn't mean more paid apps. It means a simple app update. And since when cant the iPhone multi-task?

Then why did you say it can't?

  20. I had the iPhone 3gs and then the iPhone 4. I traded that for the S2 and can say for sure after using both that personally, I think the Galaxy S range blows iPhone away. Both in terms of hard and software.

The only thing I prefer about the iPhone is a more solid feeling build quality.

I don't quite like the size of the screen on the S3 though. My S2 is already slightly to large, so bigger for me isn't good. I'd go for the Galaxy Nexus over the S3 for this reason. But both are better than Apple.
