Introduce me to new psy/trance/electronica

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by Glass Jar, Sep 20, 2009.

  1. So I've tried my hardest to appreciate the techno-ish genre.

I've listened to Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Entheogen, 1200 micrograms, and I just don't like any of them. Too repetitive and droning.

I do like the rock-electronica stuff like Ratatat and MGMT, and I can listen to Moby.

Any suggestions for a new artist to get into that's similar to the stuff I like?

  2. How about some newer industrial? Its a bit different:

  3. Too droning, I don't want to feel like I'm watching Bladerunner all the time.

I like the more airy melodic stuff, like Brian Eno could be added to my list too.

  6. I guess I didn't really describe what I want well.

I'm trying to avoid the constant 1-2-3-4 bass drum sound that techno has, I'm looking for more stuff like Ratatat which is more melodic and musical but still "electronica" and sample-driven.

Thanks for the suggestions though everybody :)
  7. check out Black Moth Super Rainbow, they're a bit like MGMT but mellower. very synthy. definitely not techno, psychpop or something like that.

The Flaming Lips are another psychband with roots in psychedelic punk and in the last 10 years have sort of invented the psychpop sound you hear in bands like MGMT.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 is a jam band that uses lots of electronic hooks you might like.

Animal Collective is a psychedelic band using mostly electronics. Panda Bear is the solo project (and more successful, imo) of one of the members.

I might also suggest Radiohead I guess, but would be surprised if you never listened to them. To be honest, I'm not much or a Radiohead fan myself.

See, the reason you're getting strange responses is that electronic music is generally dance music (derived from disco). So, if you don't like 4/4 kick drums, you'll need to look at breaks. But the bands you listed aren't really electronic music, they're experimental bands with electronic sounds. They're nothing like techno or trance.
  8. This may be surprising to anyone who doesn't really know them, but Iggy Pop and The Stooges (together and separately) are quite "trancey" and good to mellow out to.

I'm getting deeper into them and Lou Reed now, as a result.

  9. The Disco Biscuits
