This many leaves all going yellow is a sign the plant is on it's deathbed, which it probably should be since I went from 12/12 to 11/13. I'm HYPOTHESIZING that stress brought on by impending death may force the mj plant to ramp up it's THC production. Won't know unless I try, eh? It is amazing to see how the plant directly interacts with the light.
I agree. But in this case simply trying it wont prove anything. Youd have to actually test it. But again, in the paper I quoted above, the authors specifically state that more light = more THC, not the other way around. Id think its safe to assume they tested this. You have to remember, the light schedule is changed to induce and maintain flowering, more darkness than the plant needs to stay actively flowering is only going to impede growth and THC production. 12/12 is an easy ratio to do and is tried and true. If anything you should be asking yourself what the absolute most light the plant will tolerate without going hermaphrodite on ya. Those conditions will produce the best results.
I actually just thought of a fun experiment you might be interested in, using mother nature as your guide. If you grow outdoors (pretty sure I recall you saying you do, maybe Im wrong) figure out when your plants go into flower. Then find out the hours daylight that occur during the first week of flowering for that strain and use that as your metric for light needed to induce and maintain flowering. Keep that light schedule through the grow. This information could prove very valuable for indoor yield improvements.
We start flowering here in Maine in July. The last days of July, which we are definitely flowering by have 14 hours and 45 minutes of daylight.... J

Looks like my little experiment took a shit. After 2 weeks the plants now look like they are all dying. I must say the buds are outstanding looking but they are hanging on a dead or dying plant. Kinda like I'm used to seeing outside. Indoors when you go to pick the plant is beautiful. Outdoors the plant is dying. I have a question.....what's the longest an mj plant ever went budding?? It's a shame cause I can see spots where if given enough time would have filled in nicely. So I guess there more than one reason growers used 12/12. You go to 11 hours of light and you end up killing the plant. You keep it at 12/12, plant will keep on budding and budding.........
Why keep trying to reinvent then wheel? I love outdoor grows due to the simplicity of it all but in reality, the cup winners are always hydro and always indoor.. Reaching up to 30% thc (and yes they can measure).. Perhaps the "best of the best" are keeping some secrets but what has been disseminated as sound ground advice still applies.. 12/12 is a rule for a reason.
You're misunderstanding why the plant makes resin glands. You can boost resin production by supplementing UV light. Resin has something to do with blocking light from scorching the buds/seeds. ....i'll tell you one thing though. I might consider dropping an hour the final two weeks of the grow cause the buds I got have an extra frosty like you don't even need a mag glass to see 'em! First two weeks plant stayed beautiful but last two looked like death warmed over!

Interesting topic but your comment about to much light caught my attention. I do not recall seeing that as something that causes a plant to turn hermaphrodite. I have read that you can't have too much light as long as the plant doesn't suffer heat stress from it. I'd like to know more about that part if anyone has information please. Considering right now my PAR readings are about an average of 900+ that might be a cause for concern. Sorry for any thread drift.
If you don't have clear heat/light stress you're fine. Strains have different tolerances to light levels. You have to learn what your plants can handle. I get it as close as I can until I see the curling up of the serrations. Then you can back it off a few inches.
Stress doesn't necessarily cause a hermie plant. There are three basic different type of female cannabis plant. One will never turn male or have male part ever no matter how much you stress it. These plants have to be injected with chemicals to force male parts to develop when making feminized seeds. The second type of female will turn herm when it is stressed. To what degree it takes to induce hermie traits varies. The third type can develop herm traits at any time stressed or not it is random. Many early landrace strains go hemie without stress. Further, your particular degree of hermie traits can vary all the way from having a single male flower sprout on one plant to all of the buds sprouting "nanners" 4 weeks in. I had a crop like the first example. I could never even find any male parts even after harvesting my plants but I've found about 10-12 seeds since smoking over 2 ounces of my harvest so far. This did not reduce the THC in these plants. This bud is some of the stoniest I've ever smoked. Since I never could identify the male I finished the whole crop. It actually turned out great. I do believe I eliminated the hermie from my gene stock as I did not clone two of the plants and one of those has most of the seeds. I found 2 seeds in this plant
