Interested in a diy hlg saber option

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by Ngkt, Jun 4, 2019.

  1. I’d love some input. I see that hlg has a long narrow (t5 like) 100W saber light for sale. I’d love to get one for each foot of my grow tent, but I have no idea how to power each one. I do not like the idea of more compact grow lights. I’d like to achieve a very even ppfd footprint.

For example the spyder (I think it’s called) has similar construction, and very even ppfd (versus being concentrated down the middle of the lighted area).

My goal would be to have a 100% modular system that I can arrange how I want to. For example, 6 different “saber” lights, 6 different drivers/plugs. If I’m growing in a 2 x 4 area, I can use 2 lights. If I want to add light to the lower canopy, I can keep the two up top plus add 1-2 for the lower canopy. I can rearrange everything and do all 6 lights, at 1 foot intervals to cover a 4x6 area in a larger tent.

Here is a photo of a ppfd chart for these type of setups:

Here’s the link to hlg’s light “saber”:

  2. Should have a driver list on the website for single sabers.... her the driver they suggest one per each light. See if you can get one with an “a” on the end and it’ll be dimmable it’ll give you complete control on each single strip. Bye these things are supposed to be awesome.

  3. Here’s the list.

I’d get the HLG-100’s so you can push them to their full potential. But see if you can find one that says HLG-100-36a for the dimming capabilities.

  4. For a 4x6 area you want between 720-960watts for optimal growth without CO2 supplement, which would give you 30-40watts/sqf respectivally. A single sabre can take up to100watt driver according to HLG recommendations. (HLG-100H-36 OR, LPC-100-2100), this means that you will need between 7 and 9 sabres to reach those numbers.

  8. More questions, if you all are willing to discuss:

Where does the driver go/mount at?
Do these lights need a heat sink?
In addition to a driver and hanger for the lights, what other “stuff” would be needed to achieve this setup for each light?

  9. You can mount the drivers inside or outside the tent. Outside will save on heat issues.

You’ll need 18 gauge solid core wire red and black and wagos or wire nuts. Wagos would be best. The all the stuff for hangings them.

Also you’ll need a power chord for each driver. Power tool replacement chords on amazon.

  10. The Saber is an enclosed waterproof fixture and already has passive cooling, no heatsink required.

  12. Thank you all!!!!

  13. I just wanted to add that you don't have to be limited to those small drivers on each saber. They are 100 watts and 36 volts so you could easily use an HLG-320h-36a for each 3-4 in series depending on your watt goals. That driver is capable of about 350 watts out and when wired in parallel it will split evenly to each load. With the dimmers you could manage it so that it puts out 100watts to 3 loads or about 75 watts to 4 loads.

There are other driver options over buying 7-9 HLG-100h-36a's. Probably not the most economical way to go. There is also an HLG-480h-36a that would do up to 5 sabers and be right at 100 watts or so each.

  14. I am getting 6 for my 5x5 maybe more depending on heat. You answered my driver question.

  15. So this would evenly power 100 wats to each bar?
