Hey everybody, how's it going? Long time lurker, first time poster/grower. So not long ago I finally decided I'd be better off in the long run if I just grew 2-3 plants for my own use in my closet. So last Friday I put a few seeds a friend gave me into a paper towel and by Sunday morning they were well on their way. I had actually forgotten about them until that point so I rushed to Home Depot and just picked up some Miracle Gro and one of those quick and easy light strips you mount under a cabinet or something. Wasn't how I planned things originally but you make do with what you can get in a hurry I suppose. Anyway here's how they were when I got home from work tonight. I think it's going well so far, but then again this is my first time. Basically my reason for posting here is my time concern. I have a huge closet but I don't want to dedicate it all to growing. I know I want to go with a chamber of some kind but I'm not sure if I have the time to fabricate one myself or if I should just purchase some sort of container and fit it to serve my needs. This is the area I'll be working in. It measures out about 7 1/2 ft tall, 4 1/2 ft of width, and 5 ft of depth. And tonight on my way home I picked up the lights I'll be using to start with once I have A chamber. So any thoughts? Ideas? Constructive pieces of criticism?
For a simple divider you can just make a frame out of 2x2's, and then use a staple gun to attach black plastic sheeting that's at least 3-4mm thick (has to be light proof) leave a corner unstapled or something so you can get in and out. or you can just go find a large refrigerator box from sears if thats tinfoil toss that and get some mylar at a hardware store. otherwise the plants look like they are off to a pretty solid start. Good luck!
or get a small tent... easy for a person who does not want to get handy... and easy to vent and easy to light, with light hangers... Grow Tent - Greners.com
I have almost the exact space. I used CFL's to flower and a 600watt HPS for flower. I actually have my closet divieded into 2 areas of similiar size to yours. The 2"x2" with Mylar stapled to it should work and it's cheaper than a grow tent. I bought a good grow tent but it wasn't at all big enough Just overlap your mylar to create an entry way. Black and whit 5mil plastic is even cheaper.
Well I decided against the divider idea. Stealth isn't an issue at all but I just didn't feel comfortable having part of my closet walled off with black tarps. Good advice though. I did go down to Lowe's again today to get some zip ties and an extension cord and they had this cabinet which is usually $190 on sale for $20 since it had been returned. It's missing the screws and hinges for the doors but with the measurements it should fit nicely against my back wall and not look quite as weird as the 2x2's. And I plan on dividing it into two sections for now but the height gives me enough room to add another later on. I was thinking about just getting two small fans and positioning them at the top of the cabinet and have one blowing in air, while the other pulls it out. That seem like a sound move to anyone?
Sounds good. Love those cheap finds. Or you could use computer fans. If ya have some laying about their great for cooling spaces
Ah, good idea. I have a friend who's garage looks like the return center for TigerDirect so I'm hoping he might have a few spare when I head over later on. Here's the frame of the closet. I'm all tapped out of cash till tomorrow at least, but I hope to pick up the hinges for the doors later this week. Now you can see the sort of light set up I'm going to be using above. Would anyone here recommend some type of pulley system? Or am I better off using some type of adjustable brackets on the sides?
Just read the labels and get the highest cfm rated fan you can get and get a switchable power supply from radio shack for 20 bucks. This way you can dial down the fan and it makes it quieter
Well he didn't have the fans but he did have a mylar blanket. So, tonight when I get off I'm going to use that to line the top portion, and then attempt to mount the lights. I was wondering if you guys think these fans might work? Ultra Performance 120mm Case Fan Bundle - Buy One Get One Free at TigerDirect.com And here's how its looking so far. I'm not going to mount the doors until after I apply the mylar and some weather stripping, so until later this week I'm just using a very dark towel to cover the front. Not ideal by any means but it's coming together.
Alright, well those are ordered. I have another question though if no one minds. I'm worried about the odor. Granted I live in a house far away from the road and neighbors but I still don't want my room to reek. I'm only growing the three for now so I was wondering what to expect in terms of smell? Should I go ahead and start working on some DIY Carbon Filter?
yeah.. diy filter.. and a light trap here http://forum.grasscity.com/grow-roo...-light-proof-mounting-axial-box-pc-fan-5.html follow rumples example.. and just make your own filter to fit on there... I would suggest you read any and every thread rumple started... he will answer all your questions click the links in his sig
Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I actually have been checking out his threads. He's a God amongst men it seems. His threads are insanely detailed. He's like the miracle worker for stoners. I had another question while I'm at it. When it comes to lining the inside of my cabinet, I was planning on using the survival blanket my friend gave me but I was curious as to the best way to mount it? Should I just use some type of 3M spray adhesive? Will the chemicals in the glue pose any problems down the line? And how worried should I be when it comes to Light Proofing the box? Since it's basically a cabinet inside a closet, with both doors shut I don't see how any light could get in.
those trap heat.... so be careful... double sided tape..or the spray adhesive will work too. and make sure its flat against the walls if you can spend money purchase mylar or panda film... much butter... but if your in a money crunch... no biggie... just use what you have... and upgrade later... white walls works just as well as the survival blanket.... white paint is cheap
Speed, you rock man. Anyone care to comment on this picture. I'm a little concerned about the one of the left. Should it be so droopy? I've been giving them a small amount of water each day and was curious if maybe that one had received too much?
couldn't view the pic... try every other day on the watering.... i know you wanna water... but slow it down just a little... it needs to be just a little dry before you water... think lazy
hey... get all of your pictures with mj off where you have them hosted... host them here on gc.... sites like that go threw your pictures... for real.. i have seen the them do it...
