Glad this thread got bumped.

And indie has become a (broadly) defined genre. When you say "indie" people typically associate that with a certain type of sound. Of course it still can simply mean independent, but it's just a flexible word.

And here is a song I've been stuck on lately. It's so catchy

This has become one of my favorite Built to Spill songs.. it has that same vibe as some of their earlier great songs, but the rest of the album was kind of disappointing. The lyrics aren't as good but it just has a certain flow to it.

3. If you look up genres of music, you'll certainly see indie (and many of its sub-genres listed). Music is an ever changing and evolving thing. What started as a term to simply apply to artists who were free of major label, grew into a style, which grew into a "sound," and which finally became its own genre. Of course there are tons of artists who are "indie" but sound so radically different, and that's why the term sub-genre was created. It helps to break down and categorize styles separately so it's not one big mess of randomness. All genres do this. Rock has plenty (Acid, Punk, Glam, etc...), Jazz has plenty (Jazz-fusion, bebop, smooth, etc...), Country has plenty (western, pop, honky tonk, etc...), and so on.

Don't sweat the small stuff man. Regardless of categories and the like, music is still music. It's meant to be enjoyed more than it is to be cataloged. So if you don't agree with a genre, that's cool, as long as you can dig some of the tunes in this thread, I'd say it was a success.

5.
So because indie music is so diverse, it's not a genre?

I think I get it.

Indie music doesn't exist! Just part of our imaginations.

Rock must not be a genre either since there are so many bands that fall into that category.
What Im saying is all i really gather about a band when someone says theyre indie is that they dont come on the radio. Sooo many kinds of bands fit the indie bill that its become kind of useless as a way of labeling them. For example, if someone says shoegaze, or dream pop, i can quickly imagine what the music could possibly sound like.

That's why Indie has sub genres. Indie folk. Indie pop. Etc.

7. Haha so people still call the Kooks indie, right? I'm not a big fan of the band as a whole, but this one song however is quite catchy. Sure most of you have heard it but

8. Indie music, as most people understand it, sucks. It all pretty much sounds the same. Either its a huge mess of computer sounds that sound like bad out takes from The Beatles experimental era or just some fuzzed out, overglorified garage rock tune.

I think trendy art students should stay the fuck away from rock music and give it back to the losers. Maybe then we can hear some passion for christsake
