"indie" music

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by Mogwai, Dec 27, 2011.

  1. I've heard a lot about Bloc Party but never bothered to give them a listen. Thanks for introducing me, I'm diggin' it, I'll get one of their albums for sure.

  2. SUCH A GREAT THREAD! You guys have spectacular taste in tunes!

  3. Yeah this thread is awesome. I really dunno what "indie" means for sure haha. It has become such a flexible name when it comes to music. I'm pretty sure this is still considered indie though, and it has that "indie" sound. Everybody has probably heard it though but here it is just for the record.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51V1VMkuyx0]Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks - YouTube[/ame]

    And Death Cab for Cutie was like... one of the big indie bands but I feel like most people say they've crossed that line where they're not indie. Fuck, I don't know anymore hahaha. I use to like them a whole lot (still dig them, just not so much their newer stuff. But doesn't that sound typical?).

    I think this is one of the best songs they've ever done but I've spoke to a lot of fans who've never heard of it o_O

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttq544XTqoA]Death cab for cutie - Underwater Lyrics - YouTube[/ame]

    And I may as well throw this out for good measure. Again, we've probably all already heard it but maybe somebody hasn't

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FqmJy8HzQI]The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight - YouTube[/ame]
    I'm one of those people desperately still waiting for new Postal Service >.<

  4. @Mogwai

    I agree with you that indie has become a flexible term. It seems to mean one of two things primarily:
    - Successful band with an alternative sound that doesn't necessarily fit into rock or pop.
    - Semi-successful band that's not signed to any major label if at all.

    So in my opinion, I'd still say Death Cab fits.

    Lastly, I've been waiting for new Postal Service forever as well! Death Cab released a new album this year that I enjoyed, but I couldn't help wondering why Gibbard isn't bothering with the Postal Service anymore. I'd settle for a short EP just to know that they are still making music and planning to release something in the future.

    And this last one is very experimental, and they're hit or miss.

  6. Awesome dude. I'd definitely suggest Silent Alarm. I think it's by far their best but I really didn't like their other albums too much. I really wish they carried the same style the had in Silent Alarm =(. Their stuff they did before SA was really good too but as far as I know it was never released on any actual albums.

    Oh and here's some Sparklehorse. They're one of my favorite bands. So fuckin' down to earth. When I found out the singer/writer killed himself a while back it hit me pretty hard but I wasn't really upset if that's the right way to put it. Based on his writings I think he had a good understanding of what death was and I just felt like it was time for that. He was fairly old I guess, but goddamn. Not sure why he did it really. Anyway:

    Are The Libertines Indie? (Pete Docherty's a bit of a wanker but whatever)

    ASIWYFA. Don't see many people mention them, may be a bit too ambient, but as a musician I absolutely LOVE how well they pull off the tension and release part of composing

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyNjRfm6E7Q]Sea Wolf - Middle Distance Runner - YouTube[/ame]

    Sea Wolf, an artist, not a band. He contracts other artist from the area to do the instrumental work (except the guitar, I think).

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUc57c1Irlo]Radiohead - Jigsaw Falling Into Place - YouTube[/ame]

    Don't see this here either. May be a bit too "mainstream" for some people, and they certainly aren't on an indie label any more. It's Radiohead.

    Modest Mouse, of course.

    The Flaming Lips

    There's a lot more too. I saw Bright Eyes on here, and I love them too, but I'm not listening to them right now due to some reasons that are childish and petty.

  10. most of the indie i like is a little more up tempo than the folkish stuff in this thread. still i got some slower shit:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5csMQGUhfJI]The Sandwitches - Joe Says - YouTube[/ame]

    i think theyre all from the last year. i like indie electro although there aint a lot around here. guys like whitey, gypsy & the cat, lcd soundsystem are more my bag, with plenty of deerhunter and tame impala aroun as well. but theres plenty of folk i do love so staying subbed.

  11. When a friend explained to me that 'Indie' meant independant, like no-label.
    I was like... well then I've been listening to indie for the past few years?

    But it's true that it's its own genre now.
    Not a fan of, only a few tracks :p

  12. YES! THIS IS MY FORUM! So nice to see other Indie tokers out there. I was scrolling down the list and kept seeing Hip Hop threads.

    My user name is a combination of my two favorite musicians. Here is some work I admire:

  16. First off, you don't need to be an asshole. Everyone is entitled to their own taste in music, just as your are entitled to yours.

    Secondly, you know NOTHING about me other than two songs that I enjoy. If you took the time to know me, you'd know that I'm not a hipster at all.

    Lastly, you are in a sub forum of "CHILL OUT ZONE". So chill the fuck out and just appreciate each other and their efforts in sharing music.

    Nice to hear you also appreciate the music stylings of Zooey and Matt MagicDoors! I went to their concert here in Van one time and waited outside for 4 hours in the freezing rain for them to come out. Unfortunately, they had to drive back to Seattle or something right away so they had already left and none of us knew it :( LOL. Oh well. Lessons learned. I got to sing and dance on stage with Feist at her latest concert though! SUCH an awesome night. I met her after the show and she chatted with us and signed my set list and took some pics :hello:

  17. I don't know a lot of Feist's music, but I do enjoy what I have heard from her! But it's a bummer you didn't meet Zooey and Matt. Have you seen this latest video from Zooey and Joseph Gordon-Levitt from New Years? I really love it. :)
