"indie" music

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by Mogwai, Dec 27, 2011.

  1. I know, that's what I thought. Her voice is really strong, and she seems to belt it out a lot live, that's why I posted that video.

  2. Agreed, credit where it's due.

    Out of curiosity, are the drums big over in the US? Obviously i know they're an american band but i think they're completely underrated in the UK ...

    Fuck yeah man, Coconut Records is awesome. I became a fan as soon as I heard

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTzEp4CeWT8]Coconut Records "West Coast" - YouTube[/ame]

    and I also feel like mentioning

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRP6egIEABk[/ame]

    edit-
    And as far as I know the drums aren't really big in the US either

  4. I don't know the Drums, so I wouldn't know, but now I'm curious.

    And yeah, I was the same way with Coconut Records, the first listen got me hooked. The Mountain Goats are sweet, too!

    Bright Eyes was mentioned above and this might be one of his more overplayed songs, but fuck I don't care it's still a great song. And there's something about the video that just works very well. I know most people probably find it cheesy as fuck because a part of me does too. But maybe it's because they aren't really actors or people who openly sought a role in the video, but people that the singer actually knows personally and asked if they'd be willing to be a part of it. The emotions all seem pretty real whether they be happy or sad.

    The guy at 1:48 just has such a heavy look in my opinion. Haha I can look on the look on his face and actually see sincerity in it and I feel like he's probably pretty sad. I feel bad for the guy. But eh, I'm not even really sure that's what they were going for though

  6. Modest Mouse anyone?

  7. Not sure if these guys count as indie, but I love them anyways!

  8. "First Day of My Life" is one of my favorite Bright Eyes songs, it doesn't matter if it's played too much.

    Bright Eyes might be one of the most under rated bands of all time.

    He got a bad rap that he'll never recover from. Too many people paid attention to his smaller catalog of slow "emo" songs. Even though I still believe them to be raw, intelligent songs, they are nowhere near as good in quality as his psychadelic/spiritual/cosmic/ folk rock that he makes now.

    It's really a shame to see such a talented writer and artist be written off because of his radio hits.

    Thats a Monsters of Folk song if we wanna split hairs. A great example of how he has evolved over the years regardless.

    Alright.... I'm big into this kind of music... Sub'd
    So You've mentioned NMH, shins, sliver jews, and a lot of other shit i've repped soo many people in this thread lol but dude... if you like indie folk, check out Jose Gonzalez. His 'Veneer' album is among one of my favorite albums of all time. He created the whole album in his apartment with just him and his acoustic guitar, and his voice is soo smooth. He's just a chill guy all around who makes incredible music. He's my fucking idol! :)
    This song isn't on 'Veneer' but it's a cover of a pop song from like the80's or something. He makes it so personal, you would think he wrote it. The original is just terrible imo, but this version... it's... it's just so beautiful:

    Aight i know i put this in your rep message but if you dig 13 and god, check this out: anticon. records

    Another band I've been digging recently is Margot and the Nuclear So and So's:
    Open Your Eyes lyrics by Margot and the Nuclear So and So's
    Those lyrics just really get to me...

    Some good artists in that last post with tunes. And to add to the Built to Spill.. gotta love the classic

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6omZ5GsuGrI]Built to Spill - "Car" - YouTube[/ame]

    this is one of those songs I'm always going to love.

    and is Bloc Party considered "indie"? I dunno really but here it is

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOvZ8ln1riQ[/ame]

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdkmhquF60o[/ame]

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5tR03Ev_wE[/ame]

    If you know about the band you'll notice all these songs are off their first album Silent Alarm.. Eh, everything they did after that sorta disappointed me =(.. It just got progressively worse with each release. Their stuff they did before Silent Alarm was really fucking good though..

    And I'll throw one more in because it's fucking awesome. Seriously, listen to it:

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-AlcwgAVCc[/ame]

    This is another "classic" with me. I'll always love it haha

    One more real fast haha.

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_7v2WwDfuI]Yours to keep - Paola-Teddybears STHLM .wmv - YouTube[/ame]

    This is yet another classic. It really takes me back to listen to.. Lots of memories. This is what I jammed to when I first started getting fucked up and when some great people came into my life. None of them are still around but it's fun to listen to and think about shit haha. Such a fun song. And everytime I listen to it I get such a strong urge to just get totally fucked up. A lot of drugs nowadays you could put in front of me and I'd be hesitant to do them since I've calmed down. Put them in front of me and play this song however, and I'm gonna get fucked up.

    Not sure you guys will like it.. most people don't haha. I guess it has an odd sound but that's part of why I like it.
    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YaJhCXnPt8&feature=related[/ame]

    Not as good but still pretty good. I guess it's a funny song about not giving a fuck.. or something. I've always wondered if it was really Iggy Pop that worked with them on this song. It seems like such a fucking weird combination and I've heard people say they don't think it's him. Either way it's good

  17. I think Bloc Party is considered indie, but you never know anymore, lol.

    I suppose The Kills are indie? If not, oh well, I love them.
    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdeWQIM1FgY]The Kills - Tape Song (2008) - YouTube[/ame]

    And this really catchy song most of you have probably heard.

  18. With everything being on the internet, I don't even know what's considered indie and what isn't anymore. It's all good bands we all find on the internet.

    This shit seems pretty indie but I like it cause I haven't heard it on the radio a million times:
