Increase Potency

Discussion in 'Beginner Cannabis Consumption & Tips' started by What Rights, Oct 16, 2010.

  1. I read somewhere that if you bake your bud it makes it more potent.

    Is this true?

  2. its controversial some say yes some say no

  3. I personally don't think that it's true.
If you really wanted to increase the potency, add some JWH-018 to it :p

  4. Or just........smoke some dank??

  5. Are you asking if baking weed in the oven will make it more potent?

  6. Ight well I got some blue crack so that counts.

  7. Yes That is what im asking.

  8. Well, not BAKE bake, but put in an oven on a VERY low temperature...I'd say it's more like "drying it out of moisture".
Now, I've not tried this personally when it comes to smoking weed...and I certainly wouldn't with weed I wanted to vapourise...though, I believe that there might be something to it.

A lot of things I've read suggest doing this to weed prior to COOKING it into butter etc.
I make butter with some crappy tip-bud, leaf, and predominately post-vape. Like, 90% post-vape. Now this butter, is mental...seriously...spread on toast and you're good to go for most of the day. Cooked in brownies, and you're DONE.
I think what it is, is that I don't vape my weed into ashes...that's a big part of it...so there's still some active ingredients left in there obviously. Though I think the vaping process (which would probably be pretty similar TEXTURALLY to this slow baking thing that's under discussion) helps with it...true, there's less THC left in there after it's been vaped...BUT, like tea leaves, the actives disperse a lot easier after the product has been dried of moisture.
So obviously, it comes out into the water/butter easier this way...

Now, I have thought about this after hearing the whole thing about cooking/baking weed to increase potency...again, I'm not sure about smoking or vaping, I'm just talking about cooking here. Since post-vape works that way, I have to assume that doing the same thing with bud that had NOT had any of the THC drawn out through vapourisation, would give you a butter that was damn near devastating in effect.

Though, does baking it effect smoking potency?
I don't know in all honesty...I understand the principle behind it, sort of...
I'd say maybe it's kind of like things like cumin, corriander seeds and peppercorns when you're going to use them in something like a curry or casserole - it's commonplace to put these things in a large frypan on a very low heat and "dry fry" them, others place them in an oven tray and again in the oven on a very low heat...it draws out water based moisture leaving only the pure aromatics behind, the oil, the essence, and what you get is something that's a fair bit stronger in properties...though of course, this refers to taste, so I cannot really definitively say this is the same case as what's claimed with weed.

My advice is...for anyone inclined to try:
Get an 8th or a quarter ounce, and TRY it. Just be very careful while you do it, you don't want it to burn or stink out your place...if anyone does try it, I'd be interested in reading about your results.

  9. The answer is no.

  10. So you've tried it and it didn't work?
I mean I know it would be common to assume it wouldn't, but, there is a lot of information out there claiming it does...seems to have been around for a fair while too...
I totally get it in terms of cooking, as in the actives will release more efficiently, but smoking...yeah can't say I have an idea there.

  11. Maybe "baking" meaning, vaporizing :confused_2:

  12. no,
because you're heating it up with your lighter.
why would you heat something up,
just to combust it later with a higher heat and flame?

  13. /thread:smoke:

  14. But, what possible reason is there to believe that it would increase potency? It's not like THC starts multiplying when you stick it in the oven or anything. There really is no reason to believe it will increase potency.

  15. I don't know really, I mean the only thing I could throw out there, is that perhaps the water ratio is lowered which means it would smoke a little faster/better? Though that's not increased potency...uh...could be it burns faster and more efficiently therefore you get more completely combusted than if it wasn't, like you know when you smoke a bong for a while then clean it out you often find some unburned portions?
Another albeit far fetched concept, is that it could somehow "temper" the thc, gets it a bit more used to heat so that less of a percentage of it is wasted/destroyed by the fire?
I know I've read somewhere that vaping is meant to be more efficient on account of burning destroying a portion of the thc...so that COULD come into play.
In saying this, I'm not saying it does work...just offering up what occurs to me, to be the reason behind why some people may say that.

I stick by it for cooking though - it might not increase potency but it'll certainly release THC better.

  16. Heat around the boiling point of water will convert THCa into THC, the more active, usable form. This is more important when cooking with marijuana.

I find it to be a stronger and/or better high than combustion.

  18. The correct answer is actually yes. Just as with hash, putting some bud in ur oven at around >200 degrees can increase potency to some extent, just as it does with hash.

    At least thats my experience
