Not worshipping an idol is a very advanced teaching. You MUST worship some form of God at first. The lack of an idol comes when one achieves Samadhi/Gnosis, where they experience the formless God, the pure consciousness that is everything. But until then, you need an image of God to direct your worship to. This man explains it well, he is one of the very few legitimate Masters who are publically available. After thinking about it, I think having an idol is a good source of motivation with the right mindset. Setting the bar high, ya know? Worship is another story though..
