depends on the bong and what weed ur smoking, regardless get ice pinches tho.

 

It can make a decent difference in smoothness, though it does take away some from taste. If you have a harsh strain I would recommend using ice if it bothers your throat, otherwise I don't use it.
So yeah, as you said, you want to use ice, so get a tube with an ice pinch.

I'll be honest, while ice cubes cool down the smoke; imho the smoothest hit is when you put hot tap water in the bong instead. I know it sounds crazy. But just try it.
