I wanna make the transition from old school to new

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by jimboob, Aug 12, 2011.

  1. I listen to alot of old school 90's rap. Mainly Tupac, Wu-Tang, Biggie, Big L, some OutKast Nas and a few other lesser known rappers from that time period.

But I wanna catch up to whats out now. My little bro showed me Odd Future and I think they're pretty sick...sometimes ther lyrics are kinda immature though (can't really put Odd Future on with girls around)

Sooo whats good nowadays? Idc if its mainstream or underground as long as they have good flow and clever lyrics.
  2. NOTHING mainstream is good nowadays...NOTHING! look at underground rap if ur gonna try to find current lyrical talent....all the new shit is seriously an insult to the real hip-hop artists out there.....im disgusted by the main stream rap scene....stick to the old stuff or if u really want to listen to current stuff then go with underground rap....thats the only place youll be able to find some real shyt instead of this soft ass shit they drop nowadays....
  3. Lupe Fiasco's The Cool. It's a couple years old but it's a modern classic imo

Kanye West (I suggest going in chronological order for his albums- College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch the Throne)- arguably the best hip-hop artist of the 21st century

Blu ( "Below the Heavens" is a classic of the 2000's, but his entire discog is incredible)

if you haven't listened to all of Odd Future (Domo Genesis, MellowHype, Mike G) and not just Tyler and Earl I highly suggest that

    Lupe Fiasco (not LASERS)

Old Lil Wayne (Tha Carter, Tha Carter II, Prefix)

    Mos Def
  5. I give mad respect for having a diverse artist selection, and intergrating underground emcees with mainstream artists.

Chris Webby, Odd Future (you haven't heard enough if you assume it's immature), Lupe Fiasco, Old old old old old Wiz, Hopsin

Can't really think of any new middle ground artists..most have either gone completely mainstream or stayed underground. Will edit if I remember any.

Diabolic, Immortal Tech, Jedi Mind Tricks, Army Of The Pharaohs, Canibus, DZK, Atmosphere, Deep Puddle Dynamics, Sole, Alias, Tonedeff, Spoonfull, Swollen Members, Demigodz, East Coast Avengers

Nah odd future's cool but i'm mostly talking about Tyler's lyrics. Especially when he's featured he comes in and talks about rape all the time lol

Earl is the fuckin shit though even though his lyrics are similar.

I also liked Black Star and I got "Train of thought" Reflection Eternal by Talib Kweli

I posted my favorite songs by them and i hope you enjoy them as much as I do :smoking:
  8. Holy shit. Forgot Eyedea. WHOOPS! Him, too. Aesop is good, but he's an aquired taste. I listen to some ABSTRACT Hip-Hop, like left field, very limited audience style, and it took me awhile to take a liking to Aesop.

And there was one ofther guy that said his "car changes color like a chameleon lizard".you can't make a decent music video with your everyday camera IMO if you wanna make a video just stand there and rap don't walk around on traintracks and in front of shitty cars with a shaky camera and akward angles....

The south isn't really my style...most of the shit I listen too is from NY or LA. Idk NY rap just fits in better with the world around me a guess haha
