Yes as the title says I took a year out before university planning on going to work in Spain or Portugal for 6 months, I ended up taking too long to book the programme because you have to book it 4 months in advance this was partly because it was so difficult to find a reliable, worthwhile one that wasn't a complete scam and partly because I was being lazy. So I got a job for a month and a half at a new store when I realized I couldn't join the programme but was fired because they overstaffed so they had to cut employees. I have been looking for another job this whole time and nobody seems to be hiring, I must have turned my CV into about 30 different places. I am stuck in my house with my mum and dad who contantly insult me calling me lazy, useless, pathetic ect. I have no where to go. I live in ABerdeen, Scotland which is the **** of the earth and it is always raining and there is nothing to do, I think part of my hate towards this place is becaue I grew up in Brazil. At times I feel really depressed because right now my life is going nowhere. I kind of feel trapped like the only thing I have to look forward to is going to university. And I am pissed off at myself because this is all my fault, I wake up in the morning and my days are emtpy and lifeless.well... My question is will future employers ask me what I did this year, and/or will my the University I am going to (Aberdeen University to do Law and Spanish)enquire into what I did this year? This was partly a question partly a confessional cause I needed to get some of this **** off my chest.
Yeah they will ask, I'm currently going through a similar situation. Luckily for me though I actually managed to go travelling for 3 months before coming home to rainy England and unemployment. I've had several university interviews and all of them asked me what I did in my year off (which I'm currently only half way through). Just tell them the truth dude, tell them what you had planned but that it fell through because of finances and the economy or some BS. Say you spent your time trying to further your knowledge of the subject you are studying. Say anything other than "I sat around and did fuck all for a year". As long as you're a reasonably confident speaker they won't press the issue. As for employers... nah, they are unlikely to care really. If they do ask just spout the same BS you did at Uni. Btw, do you already have your place at Uni? If you do it doesn't matter in the slightest. They are legally obliged to take you on as a student if you met the criteria of their offer, irrespective of if your current situation.
to ng_hammy, yes I have an unconditional offer that I got before I took my year out thankfully I think im getting all worried cause my mum keeps saying im going to fail and my life is going nowhere and all that shit even though I am going to uni on a good course next year!!! She is such a bitch I cant wait till I never see her again.
Dude i don't know about the economy in Scotland is like but here in America the unemployment rates are really high. I had a interview Monday (2-22). They asked why i had a year of no work and i told them there were no jobs out there at all and they bought it. Good luck man! Peace Bunga
I would do one of two things: 1) Get a job (any job!) and just tell employers you worked there (you can even throw in "to help my family with bills" even though it's bill they have no way to verify). No matter how short your time there actually was, just having a verifiable employer who can vouch for your work ethic matters. 2) Tell people you went traveling. Taking a year off to "backpack" around Europe is common in some circles, so it wouldn't seem totally ridiculous.
