In reverence for the great antiquity of this post I would suggest "Computers and Data Processing", Macmillan Press, 1983. It's the perfect first year introduction to computers and programming, 36 years ago.

Currently reading Thoreau's Cape Cod. Probably more interesting to me because it's local history but it's definitely a good read.
