I jarred too soon...

Discussion in 'Harvesting and Processing Marijuana' started by PopeyeSpinach, Jun 16, 2019.

  1. Hey guys i have some bubba kush i harvested 2 weeks ago today.

I checked this morning and i thought they felt dry enough to jar, so i jarred em.

But the jars jumped right up to 80%

Not quite sure where to go here. I was thinking dump it all together in a cardboard box or paperbag, or leave em in the jars with the lids off? 20190616_110932.jpg

  2. Put them in paper sacks and rip another sack into long strips and mix into the buds. When I harvest my outdoor plants it's too much product for my dry room. When it gets full I do the paper bag thing. I've also used the bag trick to dry buds in a grow tent while another grow was going on in order for the carbon filter to do its thing.

Buds will always feel dry on the outside before the inside of the bud is dry enough. A better way to tell when they're ready is by snapping a stem. When they're too moist the stem will bend and not snap. Dont let it get too dry though. Snap a stem each day when you think you are close.

2 weeks is an awfully long time though. Is the humidity high?

  3. Ya man, im in southern illinois lol. Its 75% outside today, stays in mid to low 60s in my house w the AC on. Its not uncommon to be 100% outside for days on end. And we have had boatloads of rain this year.

  4. This will be the last time im harvesting this time of year.

2 years of fighting with humidity at every turn. I wont be starting another plant until august or september and plan to have all plants harvested by april 1st

  5. Well the paper sacks must have got thrown away. I just put them all in a cardboard box with parchment paper between layers.

  6. If you wait till, the stem snap here you might as well throw it all away as it's so dry it'll fall to dust when touched.

Many growers in high humidity areas will pull all the window screens. Lay the weed on it and lay all the screens in the living room and crank the AC down as low as it'll go.

No it wont. 1st stem snaps on one of the smaller buds the rest will be plenty moist. I didnt say dry as a desert. Thats why I said check everyday and only wait for that 1st stem before jarring. Even warned against going to long. Defiently wont fall to dust, that's ridiculous. Lol

gives a new grower something to shoot for rather then risk mold.

  8. LMAO this is Southern California. Humidity can hit single numbers and temps in triple numbers.
I've been growing here since 1976. I might just know WTH I'm talking about.
Ruined more weed from over drying, Dried to fast then most people will grow in their life.

Santa Ana wind events come right at prime harvest season. Smoking hot, stone dry desert air blows over So Cal like a blast furnace.

  9. Yep and hes been drying for 2 weeks so the humidity definely isnt low, definetly not in single digits. or it would already be super dry. It was pretty easy to know hes not dealing with stone dry air by how long hes been drying. Got to use your head for more then a hat rack. Humidity around here ranges from single digits to 90%+

  10. Drying is as important as the grow is. Blow the dry enough times like can happen here and you get really fussy about how it's done. Dried to fast or too deep is like smoking liquid fire. Once over dried you can't recover it either.

Like cooking a steak well done. It is just that and nothing will make it medium rare again. Conversed with a guy in Florida with killer humidity and he did the screens and AC trick every 4 months as his crops got harvested. Even that got tricky and he over dried a few times before he got his dry down pat.

Even just a few hours hanging on the line here can mean the difference between a great smoke and GOD DAMMMNIT not again fucked up mess.

  11. Ya its dumb humidity, cheap windows will sweat like a beer can around here.

People wonder why the mounds indian culture disappeared 5000 yrs ago. I know why, mosquitoes and humidity. One day they all just had enough lol.

Id love to move where its not humid. Vegas will be 110 and in the shade it feels like heaven to me.

Yep it is just as important. It's been 2 weeks his weed isnt drying to fast or to deep so It definetly wont be liquid fire. I never told him to hang it on a line. I told him to use a paper bag. Paper bag will act like a 2 way humididor both holding in some moisture while allowing it to slowly dry, via transfering it to the paper strips. I use this method alot and it works great.

I dont know where you keep getting this overly dry air bit from. If it was single digits it would be dry by now. I know all you Californians think your state is something special but we all deal with humidity changes. Only difference between humidity here and the humidity there is our humidity doesnt cause cancer like everything does in cali

High humidity. You'll be totally fine waiting until 1 of the smaller stems snaps. I would much rather have a popcorn bud be a tad dry then risk mold. The popcorn will regain moisture once jarred with the bigger buds and the jar will need burped because it will all still be plenty moist. Its pushing 90% here, like you I hate humidity and those biting little s.o.b.s

  15. If the humidity is in the low 60s just leave the buds out of the jars with a little air circulation.

  16. I got the popcorn here

  17. Anyone ever do the sweating method to get the inside dry put in black trash bag and it supposed to extract the moisture from middle of buds i saw a youtube video on it but i am very forgetful i would proablly leave to long and mold the lot

  18. I can see how that would help but like you say, it would be easy to fuck it all up. The color of the bag wouldn't matter much unless it was in the sun. It would work by heating the inside of the bag causing the moisture to more readily evaporate and being inside the closed bag would keep the bud from becoming too dry. Bagging without the sun wouldn't be much different than jarring, it's the same principle on a larger scale. I don't think I would try that.

  19. Humidity here is so bad at times that even if its 70 outside at night, we still sleep w the AC on and keep windows closed. It will make sheets/blankets feel damp.

I have a drying room/closet with 2 fans, 1 blowing up and one blowing down. But its 80+% out there this time of year.

I have dried more than one plant too fast and had to live w the results. But thats only during winter when it gets to single and teen humidity levels.

So am i good with the box and parchment paper layers?

  20. I think you will be good buddy just keep a close eye on it
