Firstoff: It was a temp agency. Secondoff: All I had to do was fill out a looong application with lots of signatures and lots of pages, I got a job for tomorrow- actually surprised it is so quick. I asked the woman - agent - I guess, she said this would last around a couple months. Very vague. It is warehouse packing/assembly, but didn't tell me which. What can I expect for tomorrow?
Considering the vague and impersonal process of application, I'd expect that you'll just be thrown in the deep end with little training. I suppose your colleagues will be pleased to help out the new guy, though. Don't expect a clear leader, and definitely don't expect them to be friendly and patient. But what do I know, I'm just a 19 year old student with no job Have fun, dude, and congrats on the job!
Work your balls off man...I got my first "real" job through a temp staff. Got hired to the company one day after the minimal time. Please trust me on this, big companies use temp staffs now because it's a cheap way to see who's worth giving a job. Don't smoke bud, and stand out from the other slack asses, you will get a badass job!
Is it like a warehouse or kind of like a factory? You might have a 6-8 hour Safety Orientation class to do first. Definitely don't assume this to be permanent. Make the most of your days, and try to not miss any work at all. The money will be good for you for the next few months, I presume. Just be prepared for that day down the road when you will be out of work on the spot.
I must respectably disagree. While some temp jobs are just that, TONS of employers use temp staffs now days. While the possibility of the the job ending at no notice exist, I belive the possibility of a great career is just as great. I guess it just depends on what type of job you are assigned to. It's the cliche saying "dress for the job you want, not the job you have". I was hired off my temp job after 91 days, some of the other temps had been there for two years.
You've also got to look realistically at the odds of them picking YOU out of all the temp workers. In any given work season, they hire maybe 5 temp workers. Yes, it is possible that he might get hired on, but is it realistic to believe so?
I see. All I'm saying is, I was the only temp person on my shift that had 100% attendance and took every weekend work shift I could. There were about 25 of us temps total in that department of the factory. We all got laid off just the same, regardless that my boss said he'd recommend me for hiring. Maybe the company he works for will be different.
Here for an update guys. So the work is very laid back. Pallet moving, assembling/disassembling large displays, sometimes I am doing shipping/recieving etc. There are TONS of mexis, but thats whatever. Anyway, my leader was lettin me try out forklift driving, which was pretty cool. Afterwards, he and another leader brought up the subject of if I liked working there. They then both were telling me that I should talk to the manager about becoming a team leader/ quality control leader. I was caught offguard because it was unexpected. I would get paid more, but it comes with more responsibility/somewhat harder work ethic. Then we were talking about me moving to the warehouse next door, in the same building, where i would get paid even more after 3 months, with opportunity to become even higher on the chain of command. I gues they like me lol. Can I get some input? I think that the experience will open some doors for me, but I can also put the urg on to keep letting me forklift, which is 12-13 dollars anywhere I go. Btw, this My first day was wednesday of last week, and since then I have even missed two days. *shrugs*
i did the same job a couple years ago for a summer. 42.5 hours a week. wasn't too bad i was stoned/drunk the whole time. but i worked hard and we were always busy. and i enjoy working with spanish people. they're fun to talk to sometimes. i don't miss the job but i miss my life back then.
if you can move up, take it. just remember to confine using that work ethic that got you there, if not a better one. and talk to them about getting your forklift license? that can come in handy further down the road. keep up the good work and don't miss any more days.
Well I have depression and it fucks with my sleep schedule sometimes. I sometimes stay up for 3 or 4 days straight, which I did, working 3 days in a row with no sleep and ended up crashing and missing a day. The other day I had a dentist appointment, both were nocall no shows, but nobody said anything. The company even laid off 75% of the temps yesterday. Weird I wasnt one f them.
