when you plant your seeds, you'll need to tend to it for 3 months at minimal, when the buds come out if its female, you'll have to wait for the flowering weeks to finish and the trichs have to be at least 40% cloudy and some amber

 

There are two stages to plant growth, vegging and flowering. You can veg as long as you want, realizing that the longer you do the more bud sites you will be developing. I recommend at least 6 weeks but go longer if you can. Flowering time is pretty much dictated by the plant's genetics, often 8-9 weeks but sometimes up to 12 weeks or so.

The only reliable way to tell when to harvest is to look at the trichomes under a microscope or jeweler's loupe. The trichs start off clear, eventually turn cloudy then amber. The optimal harvest is from when the trichs are mostly cloudy to when they are mostly amber, depending on the kind of high you are looking for.

A large pair of sharp scissors should be all you need for chopping when the time comes.
