Hey all, so my dad and I are at the tail end of a organic no nutrient indoor grow and recently the plants fan leaves have turned yellow. He freaked out but after some research I assured him that its normal and theres nothing to worry about. He recently went to this hydroponic store where we got a lot of our start up supplies and the guy there freaked him out by saying that our plants are "starving" and we need nutrients in there immediately. He also said our light is way to close to our plants and to jack it way up(its about a foot off our tallest plant, but we have a great ventilation system and zero to no heat). But i've heard you want the light as close to the plants as possible as long as you dont burn the plants... Is that dude full of shit, trying to sell shit from his store, or are our plants actually starving, because we haven't actually had any nutrients thus far. and also what up with the light height? is it better to have it higher or closer?(we have one 1000w)
The general rule for heat damage is stick your hand where the highest point on the plant is and if you can keep your hand there for 24 hours without it burning than so can the plant. If it is the bottom leaves that are turning yellow it is normal. The guy definitely is trying to sell you a bunch of shit. Pictures would be nice
thanks your your input, they lights are off for another hour or so but once they turn on ill go snap a bunch of pictures. *also, a week or two ago my dad fucking chopped off a bunch of fan leaves from a couple plants. I read that this was a big no no, would this be causing the yellowing?
I chop off a shitload of fan leaves all throughout my grow. I'm after buds, not leaves. Doesn't hurt my plants in the slightest. They actually seem to respond better when I do. Dude at the hydro store is shoving one up your rectum btw. Plants in flower normally have yellow leaves. Its the nature of the business. They suck the nitrogen out of the leaves and they yellow, then die off. As far as the whole trimming off fan leaves, there are a number of debates in regards to this. A poster here named 'bassman' had a nice thread going about how he removes fan leaves, had some beautiful pics too. Basically, it doesn't really matter if u do or don't, but by removing some leaves it helps with airflow and makes trimming them up at the end much less work. Your call tho homie. Good luck with your grow.
By eliminating leaves you expose more of the buds to the light source. With the leaves present it produces a canopy so that it is not getting direct light constantly. Never heard of it curbing growth before.
Your leaves are your energy top produce buds, think of them as solar panels for your plant... Shine a flashlight through a fan leaf, even 4 leaves stacked together the light goes right through it. I prefer to tuck the ones i can outta the way
This guy has a great way to do it, just tuck them out of the way. Leaves can be pressed into cannabutter and/or edibles
