  1. Go with soil in a 1'6"x2' abox under a home depot 150w hps security light and convert it to remote ballast (read faq). http://www.overgrow.com/growfaq/1151

grow scrog style wich is basicly setting up a chicken wire screen about 10" above the soil and direct each shoot through a hole so you end up with a bunch of small colas.

After you get a soil grow under your belt make a 2 bucket bubbler setup for about $50+ ferts and a ph/tds pen thats runs about $100. the most expensive thing about getting staretd with hydro is the digital pen. With soil you might want a ph meter that you cam pick up for about $12 at a garden store but it isnt needed. stick woht soil and just learn teh basincs about plants, then go hydro. soil everying goes slow so if you mess up you will catch on, get some help and fix it. With hydro if you mess up and dont notice and correct it within the next day or two your screwed and you have dead plants on your hands.

  2. any kit that is offered for sale, you can build an equivalent set at home cheaper.

If you want to grow using hydro, look up the bubble bucket method and build it. Real cheap to build, but nutes, lights, and meters will cost some cash.
