Hey guys! I was wondering what your take was on using a humic/fulvic acid as a chelator in a sterile hydro system (RDWC)? I have heard varying responses from everyone so far. I have been told that it won't make a difference in a sterile environment and would be a waste of money. I have also been told that it helps the plant uptake nutrients no matter what the medium, and that it is a good buy. The reading I have done has led me to believe that at the worst it will be inert. What are your thoughts? Does anyone have any experience with this?
I'm leading to the inert, but worth a shot if you got it and are interested in seeing a test run. Heard the same varying opinions. Never tried it myself. My mind wonders if it technically might make a slight bit more space in your solution due to its nature... So maybe like fish and tanks and rocks... A way of putting an invisible space or medium into your solution and thus a bit more pressure in the solution... which of course cause of the upping of ppm, but I mean past that, like more solid cause it would hold the food right. And then varying issues may be possible with nutes which get in there and you may not want getting released when you don't want? Or is it gonna be heavy and end up just sinking into you dwc? But I see your having it recirculating... I think I remember in school they said it wasn't worth the cost and potential problems, like other ways to up yield or plant health. However that was talking about hydro synthetic not aqua culture in where I ... Damn pot... Can't remember ... There was something specific in aquaculture and doing fish, maybe a yes but keep it really limited cause again can cause issues... Maybe with the release of N at improper time or something to do with the oxidation.. damn now I'm really rambling. Maybe yeah it was the decay due to the oxidization making the N and P have issues with releasing ferts in the fish side of the aquaculture.. however long time ago, I'm sure there are studies out there.
Rambling is my jam in real life lol. It is a liquid nute so i don't think it will sink to the bottom, man at least I hope not. I know enough about hydroponics to know that I may be over my head hahaha. It will totally up my ppm, so IDk if I want to add it just yet without someone who has used it before letting me know their results. I keeo hearing about potential problems. Dang, I will def check out some studies tho that is a good idea!
Hydro nutes are already chelated so there's that but there's been some benefits shown and no real downside to it. Here's a paper on the subject with links to a few studies that show different effects from different humic sources peat or leonardite. Its Its an area that needs more work for sure . I say give it a try. "Humic acids in hydroponics: What is their effect? – Science in Hydroponics" https://scienceinhydroponics.com/2017/09/humic-acids-in-hydroponics.html
This guy has a PhD... but he also owns BioAg, the company that sells the humic substances... Anyways, it's very informative, and I think I'm going to give the fulvic a shot (but it's expensive). Podcast 11: Dr. Faust of BioAg on Humic & Fulvic Acids
Hey man! Thanks, I keep seeing positive results for people who run beneficial bacteria. I think I will try it an hope that it doesn't create a good environment for bad bacteria lol. I do keep my water temps pretty chilly though (64-67) and use UC roots. So hopefully that will keep all the bad stuff at bay.
Hey Chief! Thanks man this is a great source, looks like I have a new podcast to binge! This is so great, I have been thinking about looking into a gardening podcast. I just added this to my spotify playlist! I just bought some diamond nectar from GH and was a little worried that it was going to go to waste lmao. This sounds like a real positive review from Dr. Faust. Very cool, thanks so much for the help!
There a link in the paper i posted about a study with strawberries where they had a boost in yield and quality, Im not sure it would be noticeable with 1 or 2 plants but maybe. I was thinking about using the Raw Fulvic acid that i have to adjust ph and it has a ton of trace minerals that would have to help buffer our RO water possibly creating an even more ph stable solution?? Lol You have talked me into it.
Now, who wants to dig into the amino acids? Lol. I have not been able to find any positive papers. Except for sales people. Any of you guys see anything?
Seems the amino acids can help with certain types of stress here's a couple papers on the subject. "(PDF) Influence of Amino Acids in the Hydroponic Medium on the Growth of Tomato Plants" (PDF) Influence of Amino Acids in the Hydroponic Medium on the Growth of Tomato Plants "What is the effect of amino acids in hydroponics? – Science in Hydroponics" https://scienceinhydroponics.com/20...ence that, help plants under stress conditions.
You have the RAW products? How do you like them? I looked into them a little bit last year before deciding on GH. Super curious about those though! IDK if the fulvic acid will help to stabilize the pH, but it sounds like a good idea. Here is a link to some technical information about it as a pH up or down? Fulvic Acid as pH Down? - Dude Grows
Wow that's neat. I haven't really looked into them at all but the science behind it makes sense to me as a layperson lol. IDK if you have ran across this article yet but I will link one, for ya. I have found the RQS site to be pretty legit so far. I like the break down of what type of amino acid plants use, with my limited edu on bio it looks pretty spot on. Here's a good video on the whole package of these types of things. Gotta remember though Harley Smith is also a salesman. Lol
