How to start over in California (LA area). Please Help-College Student

  1. To describe myself first: I'm Mitch and I'm a straight 19 year old guy and I live in Charlotte, NC. I go to a community college just to use up my scholarship but I want to move away and start over. Over the past 2 years, I've gone through depression and recovered but I just don't feel right here. About a month ago I went to visit a friend in Santa Monica, CA and had the greatest week of my life. Great bud, great people, beautiful weather, and great beaches. My friend recently moved out of CA, but I still want to go, even if it means by myself. I like to go clubbing, i love nightlife, and I want a party life but in moderation.

Plans: I want to go to SMC(Santa Monica College) and then transfer to UCLA. I don't know what major (another hard decision) but I want to live in either Hollywood area, Santa Monica, or somewhere around there. I will have a car, so location doesn't need to be walking distance to SMC or UCLA. If there are any other colleges with a good transfer rate please tell me, I will be taking General Ed classes at what ever community college i go to, but I want a easy transfer.

    My Questions:
-How to find a roommate before i move out there?
-Where is it affordable to live but good location?
-How hard is it to find a job out there at my age?
-How much money should i save before moving out there?
-What are the best dispensaries in that area?
-Any other advice I should need.

    Thanks everybody for your advice.

  2. I wouldn't move to LA if you want to make it. I would try Nocal, maybe Humboldt.

  3. Please give other suggestions of other places/colleges. North California is an option for sure, same with Colorado.

  4. I would seriously go with Humboldt or the surrounding areas. It is the grower capital
of California, and you can pick up medical grade weed there cheaper than anywhere else.

You could find a roommate possibly by going on craigslist and just stating that your moving
to California on so and so, and need a 420 friendly roommate when you get there.

California is one of the tougher states to find a job in right now. Their states economy is in really bad shape.

I would save at least six months rent plus money for gas, food and utilites just in case the worst happens and you cannot find a job quickly. At least a couple grand.

Just look up local community colleges before you go, so that you can enroll and be in school the time you get there.

  5. Haha I have a few friends that go to SMC and they said it's a party ass school. Not sure if it's in the area but around where I live in LA some of the good dispensaries are House of Kush and AEC. HOK has VERY DANK bud. Some of the best i've ever smoked. Also the prices are good, capped at 50 an eigth I believe. Also if you're in the LA area try some Diablo OG KUSH or anything with the name DIABLO :). Herijuana is good as well that sht gets me fcked up. AEC has some bomb ass cookies for $5 that got me high for like 8 hours. I think half a cookie would be good for a day though. You can also use weedtracker.com to find dispensaries near you. Good luck in LA though, one of the best places to be imo. :)

1)Roommates, roommate finder and roommate search service
    Craigslist
ask your prospective college if they have a message board for students to talk about housing. Mine did

    2) Non-existent. You better rob the piggy bank my man, because financial aid for an out-of-state California college student is terrible as most of the aid is a California resident only grant. This is without mentioning the out of state tuition bump, which is incredibly huge. You're gonna be balls deep in loans if your rents aren't loaded. I don't recommend your game plan at all.

    3)very. Even at Wendy's, etc

    4) 10 grand at least, not including books, tuition, parking. Even then it's a risk without parental help. There is a very real chance you might never find a job there till you graduate

    5) Once you make friends you won't visit the dispensaries. It's generally over-priced outdoor marketed well, with some purple to boot. There are great dispensaries with great weed, but you can find the same shit on the street for half the price. You'll find the hook up within a week, tops.

(any other advice)- re-think this if your parents are not incredibly wealthy. If your heart is set on cally, you need to either:

    A) drop out for a year and do everything you can to save money while establishing residency in California, then return as a california resident at an affordable rate.
    B) Graduate college, then move out West.

  7. San Francisco is the greatest place ever, and you know after two years at a junior college you can go to any UC?

  8. Thank you everybody for your advice. SMC is pretty affordable for out-of-state, since its only like 900 bucks a semester which isn't bad at all for me personally. And no my parents probably will help me to a minimum. They really don't agree with my views. San Francisco has interested me but I have never been, but it is very interesting to me. If I sell my car and get a cheaper one I'll probably make around 5k so that may be an option too. Is Colorado good for a person my age? I'm interested in places with Medical Marijuana, I'm sick and tired of having to watch my back everywhere I go. I use Medical Marijuana for my depression and anxiety. But are there any other states or cities that may be more affordable? What's the comparison of prices between Humboldt and L.A area? I dunno, I just feel I need to get out of the Carolinas, unless HB1380 passes, which is very unlikely anytime soon. And I've been here for 13 years, it's time for a change.

  9. Yeah in re: to schools - you will be paying out-of-state tuition costs until you become a resident - which means you have to have lived here for 1 full calendar year. That's exponentially larger than in-state tuition and you won't be able to utilize most of California's financial aid until you're a resident.

  10. dude in la or sf you cant even take a piss unless you have money, out of state tuition highest cost of living a full time decent job might just barely cover your costs but those dont exist anymore especially for the unskilled. all those happy young faces in la have rich parents its mind bending how many there are u should check out santa cruz it is full of sparse-bearded stoners and the chicks are ez has a beach front community college is close to sf sunny most of the year and pretty easy to find roommates (cl) and about as close to paradise as u can get without a trust fund its still expensive but even if you wind up poor its got a much cleaner underbelly than the big city
