How to hide smell without using a carbon filter?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by cinnamonbun, Jun 7, 2022.

  1. I have this sort of expensive device called an 'Oreck air purifier,' would this hide the smell of plants in flower?

What other options are there to hide/mask smells without using an extraction fan? Are there any?

  2. I have several air purifiers and the one I use while drying helps greatly with odor, but doesn't kill all odor.

  3. Yes a really good one will kill some of the smell very little compared to a carbon.
Now the cost of a good filter your talking about may cost more then a carbon.
Other options . Negative air pressure room or tent. You open the door to the room and air always gets pulled into the room . So zero smell can escape . The air from the grow goes outside its always vented so that outdoor smell will be very min . This is the second best way to go to hide the smell.
No other options that actually work. option two Smoke a blunt in the house will hide the fresh growing smell.,
Option three incents and scented candles will hide a lot of the smell of a smaller grow not all .
Option four . Always have something cooking . I love chicken soup homemade it smells very strong and hides the strong smell before guests arrive .
I am excited to hear other opinions .
Last resort option for emergency situations only . Called ozone generator . Do not let this run in your home. It will for sure hide a lot or all of the smell in a small grow . BUT. its like breathing highly air pollution air . They are not safe for use for a person or animal to breath the air for long periods .

  4. Why wouldnt you want a carbon filter if you dont want the smell.
1- that's specifically what they are used for
2- you dont have to do anything but hang and connect to inline fan
3- they last longer than recommended

Every other option will require more work and more money. You may not understand how strong cannabis is when in flower. I have them but stopped using carbon filters. You can smell 4 plants on my front porch, house is stout and pungent.

  5. Without a carbon filter the only sure way to hide the smell would be to kill anyone who gets within 50 feet of your house. But then that raises a whole different smell issue.

  6. Because I'm not growing inside of a tent, therefore it's kind of hard to utilize a carbon filter they way it's intended to be utilized.

I'm doing a sort of funky closet grow; unorthodox, cheap, but effective. It's like the little grow that could, if you would. LOL

  7. Long before their was any carbon to assist the grower we used passive air,
sucking from all around the house then into the grow room with stink,
then, out the grow rooms vent works well to this day as most/all
carbon won't work if the grains are damp like 2 days of heavy rain the carbon blocks up with the damp

    good luck

  8. Why wont it work in a closet? Plenty of folks run inline and filters in closets. When growing anything but especially cannabis be prepared before you're ready. Be bad if you get to flower and nothing you thought would work does. Have you running around looking for another fix then another when all you need is the fan and filter. Not trying to be a asshole like you HAVE to get the filter it's just the easiest most effective solution. Good luck bud hope you find another option, that works to your satisfaction.

  9. Because the closet is over 8 feet tall and 7 feet long, the inline fan necessary to move that much air effectively would probably cost close to $400. I don't want parts exceeding the cost of the growlight itself. Plus all the additional drilling in the ceiling to install it, and then anchoring it, the plumbing involved, etc.

Like I said, it's a simplistic setup. Nothing overly extreme. I have my budget growlight anchored, I have a cheap 16" oscillating fan for circulation, small dehumidier, I got mylar stapled to the walls. I'm fine with the smell, tbh. But I've never before grown, so I don't know how bad the smell is. I might be in over my head but I don't know. I'm just considering my options in case it overwhelms me.

  10. You might consider what I do in my drying space, which is basically a closet. I have my carbon can on the floor with an extraction fan sitting on it. Constant circulation and funk removal. Can use a pretty small can. Still need to vent your grow space, but whatever gets vented will smell far less. I will dry a lb at a time in a utility room in my basement this way. Fan on =minimal funk. When the fan is off, my house smells like a boxcar from a Panamanian freight train. Also works great to set it nearby while trimming to knock down the funk. Good luck. Cheers

  11. A fan from ebay would cost about 60 bucks to move that air . Did you shop around ?

  12. No short cuts in growing as in life.

When I was a teen cops took plants from my sliding wardrobe cuz I didn't use a carbon filter. Stunk out my street but I didn't know it could do that until I started smelling it on my way home.

  14. The alcohol lamps like they sell at the lampstand.com were designed to remove smells in hospitals. You can use scented or straight 99% isopryl.

  15. I run a filter on the floor with a fan on top no vents. Works great. One in the closet one in the room the closet is in.There is really no point in venting stinky air out of the tent unless you are also blowing stinky air out of the room the tent is in.Just a fan on a carbon filter anywhere makes a great freshening difference. Especially if you are smoking.

  16. Depends on the # of plants and the strain as some can be pretty stinky.
I don't run a filter as I have a vent that is in the air through my roof of the building, about 3 stories high.
    I grow 6 plants at a time.
I mix the chamber air with ambient air and then it goes through the vent.
Even being that high, if the air is still there are times I have walked downwind and caught a whiff of my grow.
