How to convince my parents that I'm not addicted?

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by mrkrishan, Jan 4, 2012.

  1. Hey guys I've been an everyday smoker for around 7 months now and my parents wont give up the idea that I'm addicted. I don't think I'm addicted, I just don't stop because I go to community college and I'm at a 3.8, I don't pay for weed cause I sell enough to break even, and it takes off so much stress and makes my life overall so much more enjoyable. The problem is I live with my parents and they never stop complaining that I'm addicted and I'm sick of them getting mad if they catch me burning alot. Anybody have some good tips on how to convince them that I'm not addicted and I'll be able to completely stop after college?

  2. They want to see addiction? Start drinking a fifth of whiskey before lunch and a pack+ cigarettes a day. Start neglecting your studies while you try every other drug under the sun all while keeping up the cigarettes and booze. Disappear frequently for 2-3 days and return home on the come down. Steal from your parents, friends and anyone else you can.

Then after a few months of this say "Wouldn't it have been better for everyone if I just kept smoking weed?"

    That would probably convince them.

  3. Well, are you addicted? The last time I checked weed is not addicting. Is it possible for you to take a few days to a week off from smoking? I don't like taking breaks from weed, but sometimes you have to so you can lower your tolerance. I know that none of us smokers want to take breaks, but I have noticed that taking just one day off away from weed makes it much easier to go even longer without weed.

  4. Why do you want to completely stop after college?

  5. This guy makes some very good points. I know someone that is addicted to pain killers. He likes to pop these blue hydro pain pills just to get high. Its to the point now that if he does not take his pain pills, then his body will feel like it hurts when it really doesn't. He is addicted to the point where he will steel money from anyone so he can feed his addiction by getting more pain pills.

Marijuana is not addicting like other substances and will not ruin anyone's lives like alcohol or tobacco will.

  6. You might not be addicted to weed like crack but weed cAn be addictive in another way by feeling. Just an idea im prob wrong.

Weed is proven not to b addicitive but it can be addictive if you love the feeling you will smoke it only to get that feeling.

Again your not addicted to weed like crack but you could be addicted to the feeling so thats why you smoke

Also iv been smoking for 2 years now nd thats just my thought cuz if there was no feeling why would people keep smoking lol idk

  7. Very similar to my life story, only I was drinking neat vodka from the bottle, and didn't steal. Now my parents are perfectly fine with smoking weed, because they know it's better than the other drugs, ive been clean for around 8 months now?

  8. Yea when I stoped taking 30mg oxycodone after 3 months I had serious withdraws and your body is just in pain and u feel like shit for like 5 days. But it is all a mind over Matter and if u really want to quite. I stoped cold turkey and never went back.

  9. its just like this theres no way you can convince um you aint unless you just stop smoking....so misewell toke up and not give a fuck what they think

  10. Addiction to opiates and cannabinoids are completely different...the latter being almost exclusively psychological, as is crack. Opiate withdrawal can be dangerous, cannabis withdrawal is not.

The best way to prove to your parents (and to yourself) that you don't have a problem would be to take a break. It doesn't hurt anyway. I've been smoking for 12 years, heavily for 5, but it's nice to have a clear head from time to time.

There is an important distinction to be made between addiction and abuse, the latter meaning that it is having a negative impact on your life.

Your parents are your parents and you should respect their very valid concerns. Smoking weed can affect your work/studies; while it isn't really addictive, it can be abused. It is their duty to be concerned about you, if taking a short break will alleviate their concerns then you should do that. Maybe consider limiting it to weekends as a compromise.

Reasoning that alcohol/crack is more harmful is not approaching the issue on their level and just looks like poor excuses from an addict in their eyes...no matter how much you back it up with sources. Put yourself in their shoes.

    Good luck.

  11. Weed addictive? LOLWHAT

  12. Stop for one month while your parents see you stopping for that long.

  13. Man smokes cigarettes everyday and the stoners call him an addict.
Stoners smoke weed everyday and call themselves enthusiasts.

It's bullshit and I hate how stoners get hung up on that childish technicality of "it's not physically addictive, therefore it isn't addictive" in order to totally rationalise the fact that they can't go a day without weed. When asked to reason why they smoke everyday, it's always some rosy description like "I enjoy doing it, therefore I shall" or like the OP, hit out with some excuse to try and show that it doesn't matter because "it hasn't changed anything". My point is this - why can't you all just start being a little bit more realistic about weed?

Let's see all the daily smokers go a week without weed to prove that they can, before going RIGHT back onto it again...

  14. Just like video games bro, anything can be addictive.

  15. Yeah definitely man - people can become addicted to TV / books / chocolate / porn... whatever floats their boat, but when everything they own is sticky or it's getting in the way of progress in life - that's when it's an addiction. Just want more people on this forum to try and recognise the more.... addictive (for lack of a better word) side of weed.

  16. Chocolate addiction will do that to your things.

The term I suspect you are looking for is potential for abuse. As I said in my previous post, addiction and abuse are different things. You can abuse a substance you are not addicted to and not abuse something you are addicted to.

For example, a man who watches 10 minutes of porn twice a day might be considered addicted, but unless his habit is having a negative impact on his life (he finds himself jerking off to a girl on the bus) then it isn't considered abuse.

Conversely, if a student smokes weed everyday (psychologically addicted) but does his homework, gets straight A's and holds down two part time jobs, it shouldn't really be a problem (health effects aside).

  17. rofl!

  18. Thanks guys! Think I'll talk to them about addiction vs. abuse and maybe take a week break, but last time I told them I'd take a break they expected it to be for a month.. hope this works lol

  19. Be prepared to compromise. They'd be well within their rights to ban you from smoking it in their house completely.

Also, look at your situation objectively and ask them to be honest about their concerns, you might just get some insights on yourself.

    Good luck.
