What does someone look for in replacement bulbs for MH and HPS lights? Is it worth the cost to buy bulbs specifically made for growing plants?
Get a bulb with a lot of lumen output in your required wattage. Enhanced spectrum bulbs are a good choise as they usually have more lumens (and watts) and have light from the other side of the spectrum.
