we'll just assume its in soil. water till it just starts to drain out, whenever you water, there should always be water draining into the plate. rule of thumb, water when the top of the soil is dry, some might tell you they let the soil get very dry and then give a good water(the theory being the roots get more oxygen), what i'm suggesting is a fail/safe method.
