How much slower is Vegging under HPS? vs MH or CFL?

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by kdspecial, Sep 12, 2011.

  1. I have a small Cab. 2dx2wx3h feet with a good vortex fan and carbon filter for ventilation etc.

I was thinking of trying a 150W HPS bulb in there as opposed to the original design and plan of using 96W T5 tube mix spectrum

I know the flowering will be much better but i'm curious about how much slower my veg time will be? using the warm spectrum for VEgging. As opposed to the MH or T5s?

This 150W ballast is not MH compatible and I have yet to find a conversion bulb that small.

I have seen a ballast on Ebay that would work for both spectrums

150W HPS MH Digital Electronic Ballast KIT FREE MH175 | eBay

but honestly it looks junky compared to the nice 150W HPS I was shown at my local grow shop.

Sun System 150W HPS High Pressure Sodium Complete Light | eBay

And in my small cab I don't wanna mess around with and home made shit or half assed stuff. I think the heat and fire/safety factor is too high.

Should I just forget about the idea of trying an HPS and stick with my T5s like I am used too? Or take the plunge and go HPS and maybe put up with some heat issues and having to tie down plants but reap the benefits harvest time.

any advice is greatly appreciated thanks kindly

  2. I vegged with a 600w hps cant comment on if its any slower then MH as Ive never used one but it was a lot better then 200w envirolite blue spec although that was only because of the difference in wattage.hps should be fine just adjust the light height fairly often during seedling stage to find the perfect spot that doesnt burn the seedlings but doesnt cause them to stretch either

  3. It is not about slower or faster it is all about the size. Better(powerful) light bigger your plants. Look at that this way : If you want to get more your light should be "bigger" .Plant under 200W CFL never going to get as big as under 200W HPS with in same time period. I am not talking about the height ,but size and amount of buds...
Speaking of MH, veging under MH will keep your plants "bushier" , internodes will be shorter than if you would vege under HPS....

  4. CFL is far slower than vegging with HPS, it's not a contest. HPS is likely also faster than MH.

  5. I would say not faster but taller. Under HPS during the veg period plants will stretch more than under MH .

  6. I can say I agree with the above. I will also say that I vegged 3 plants with a 1000 watt mh and a month later moved in a few more plants but switched to an Ushio high blue spectrum hps and it is awesome. The plants under the hps grew taller faster but the node distance was close to the same. The hps stretched a bit more. I may veg and flower with that same bulb next run.
