How much higher does "coughing" get you?

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by MadBuds, Feb 11, 2009.

  1. Is there an actual study of this?
  2. I don't think there has been any study on it.. But, I would assume it's because your lungs open up more temporairly.. I doubt coughing after your hit (assuming you only took one), would affect it any.. But, I would assume if you coughes a lot before your hit, you would be able to aborsb it more... If that makes any sense.. xDDD
  3. Not sure on any actual evidence that coughing gets you higher. I know some novice smokers who seriously beleive that coughing before and after taking a hit gets you higher. In all reality I don't see how you could really get much higher from coughing, but until I see evidence I'm resting neutral.
  4. It doesn't get you higher, people just think it does because you get slightly light-headed after having a coughing fit, thus some people think they are getting abnormally high
  5. Some of my friends who smoke a lot everyday say that they can only get high by taking massive hits and having painful coughing attacks. It hurts to hear.
  6. No, just no.
  7. Idk some of my friends swear it does get you higher, but I really don't think so nor have I ever actually seen a study that proves this.
  8. I think this goes along with "does holding the hit in make you higher..." In both cases i'd say no. Try holding your breath normally...its just light headedness. And coughing is just your lungs reacting to the hot ass smoke your subjecting them to. Ive never heard of coughing before or after (but still, dont think it makes a difference).
  9. Coughing gets you like... at least ten times higher man... -- Sol
  10. It doesn't gets you higher, you just feel higher for maybe a minute, because your eyes get teary and there's alot of pressure near it which makes it temporary feels like you're getting higher.:)
  11. lol I will say though, if u do take a massive hit and then cough it does make u think your getting higher, at least for me I know when i cough I know Im gonna be pretty damn high.
  12. I'm not sure, but I know if you take a large hit and cough, it means you probally got a very good hit.

I've taken large rips and not cough, and still got severly baked. I've also forced a cough with a hit, and it seems to get you higher, but could all be placebo.
  13. I heard someone say on here that it gets you higher because coughing opens up your lungs and your alveoli. Alveoli are in your lungs. "The alveoli are the final branchings of the respiratory tree and act as the primary gas exchange units of the lung"

So basically... you cough which opens up the alveoli more which means your lungs will receive more thc. But like other people said...there has been no study. This is just what someone told me.
  14. Not much, if anything. I'd rather smoke, smooth Widow. Wait, I am.
  15. the more you cough the more you get off
  16. Someone explained this to me once, i dont know if its bullshit or if they were for real, but they said when you cough the motion of your diaphragm opens up more capillaries in your lungs allowing more smoke in and thus absorbing more thc... could also have something to do with increased bloodflow, in combination with more thc and a rush of blood to your brain?

again i dunno if it was total bullshit or what but it made sense to me.
  17. I think its the other way around. You dont get higher because you cough, you cough cause you just took a massive rip, which means your going to get really high.
  18. Stupid...Stupid..Stupid:bolt:
  19. i must say I doubt its truthfullness. google it lol

Coughing is obviously an indicator of a big, high inducing hit (or, how much your body is able to handle)....fuck this, wikipedia is bookmarked

"A cough, in medicine, is a sudden and often repetitively occurring defence reflex which helps to clear the large breathing passages from excess secretions, irritants, foreign particles and microbes. The cough reflex consists of three phases: an inhalation, a forced exhalation against a closed epiglottis, and a violent release of air from the lungs following opening of the epiglottis.

The epiglottis guards the entrance of the glottis, the opening between the vocal folds. It is normally pointed upward, but during swallowing, elevation of the hyoid bone draws the larynx upward; as a result, the epiglottis folds down to a more horizontal position. In this manner it prevents food from going into the trachea and instead directs it to the esophagus, which is more posterior."

So, this "violent" release of air from the lungs could have a compressing effect on the smoke and might actually make you higher, but its just speculation.
