How many other Bong makers are like JP from toro?

Discussion in 'Bongs, Dab Rigs, Bubblers, Water Pipes' started by kliff2004, Oct 16, 2011.

  1. I was thinking about this the other day.

What I mean is, JP wants very strict control over how is products are sold and what price they are sold at as well.

Is anyone aware of other big names feel the same as him?

Just for example, does anyone know what Steve from SG feels about the topic?

Maybe he's never offered an opinion on the subject but I am curious.

I haven't heard of that coming from almost any company, glass or otherwise, to be honest. I don't know of anyone every getting mad about people reselling their products (like the whole boycott BM thing JP did) at any price, and I've never known a company to put a limit on the price a retail store can sell their product for. Usually the store pays a set price to buy wholesale, and whatever they choose to sell it at is their business, its not like it should be effecting JP's income anyway...he already got paid for that glass. Honestly its a pretty bad business model to try to control that much, and if thats what he wants he should just sell direct.

I understand he wants to keep up an image of luxury and all that, and my guess is that he gets offended that people who know their glass well generally look at toro and can't justify the price they ask...usually you can find equal or better quality glass with equal or better diffusion at a lower price, so when people resell toro the price goes down, otherwise people would just buy a different brand. I guess that lower price is the market telling JP that his work isn't worth what he thinks it is, and his response is to try to control the market rather than either improve quality or adjust the price to reflect a changing market.

edit: point taken fubar, there are a few markets that do things like that, just not quite to the same level of JP, particularly with trying to boycott BM because people were selling his tubes for a lower price than he wanted. I understand telling your distributors the lowest acceptable price, but once its been bought then the owner can sell it for whatever they want.

  3. As with anything in this world that's up for grabs... it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Initially, the "must have" buyers will pay whatever it costs on release day, just so that they can be one of the first to own, as we all see when apple release a new version of i-phone for example.

Afther that point though, the market force is made up exclusively of john doe, jo public, aka the faceless masses, who tend to be on a bit of a budget most of the time.

For a while, item can be used an objects of desire, the things that my generation used to save up for and look forward to... although these days its more a case of buy now on plastic and worry about paying that bill later !

But i digress... sonner or later, the only market out there is the mass market, and if you don't cater to them and their needs, you cease trading.

  4. By the way, not trying to sound like a dick but the correct terms for these people are artists & glassblowers. Not "bong makers." Just clearing that up lol.

  5. this is standard practice for alot of electronics such as ps3 xbox ipods etc

the manufacture sets the price thats why you see stores will give u a free game or controller when consoles go on sale because they can not lower or raise the price

  6. ahhh thats good to hear.

  7. The only thing I have heard regarding SG in terms of product control is where they are sold online (rumors of what is supposed to be an exclusive deal with "water lab") but nothing about fixed prices.

I know that my preferred LHS told me they had to drop BC glass because of complaints from JP and SG...not quite sure what was their issue with BC though or the specific details of the agreement with my LHS.

  8. I agree with mad a except the fact that I have seen this in some industries where companies have a recommend resale price but it is definetly frowned upon in my opinion what jp does by micromanaging the final sales price...like mada said he already got paid.

He was trying to use the advanced nutrients marketing plan to charge super high prices which seems to pull in people who think it's the most expensive...it must be the best....also it's a brand that is slowly fading in popularity from the early 2000's to now.

I believe anything is worth what people will pay but I respect companies who recommend a suggested resale price but don't hold you to it...flexibility is important in running a successful business sometimes and it just seem s jp is set In his own ways.

  9. holy ass balls.

Hope someone knows about that, it sounds interesting

  10. Bc went on a Facebook crusade flaming out sg, hitman, zob etc all out of a jealous rage. I can see why other artists wouldn't wanna sell their stuff along side bc2011

  11. Lol really?

    Well there ya go.

  12. yeah was one of the most unprofessional, childish, jealous rages I have ever seen on the internet since I got on this crap-hole in 1998

  13. oh disappointing. I had figured SG was pissed because of the netline design being a sort of copy of the SG stemline but I could see that being an issue as well. I mean my friend at the shop said he wasn't really sure the specific reason for the fued and the owner wasn't around so I couldn't tell you. I know they dropped BC with that motivation from those blowers since they sell less BC stuff than SG and Toro. I also just know I was very disappointed to see BC glass disappear from that shop as my other LHS fave doesn't carry brian's stuff either and bc glass is one of my favorites.

What were the reasons/specifics of the "flaming crusade"?

  14. Errr... they make bongs... urgo, bong makers.

A bus driver who doesn't crash his bus on a dailt basis is not an artist, he's merely a good bus driver.

These guys may well be good at what they do, but what they do is make bongs... sooooo, how about "craftsmen" or "master craftsmen"?

Skilled for sure... but artists???

  15. ^^ art is relative my friend. the creator of said art is therefore the 'artist' :smoke:

  16. your not a artist because you make plastic tubes, glassblowing itself is a art, not busdriving

  17. There is absolutely nothing about glass blowing that it not art. These guys need the creativity to come up with their design, the practice and materials it takes to be able to create it, and the actual artistic skill that it takes to morph a piece of glass into a creation.

Have you ever seen a glass blower in action? Or any heady pieces? Surely the amount of color work alone in some pieces would convince you this is art even if you do not know the process it takes.

Some people out there throw paint cans onto a canvass and it is universally accepted as art yet these blowers create beautiful masterpieces with their own hands and that isn't art?

I'm just curious what your definition of an artist is. No hostility intended, I am actually curious :p

  18. I'm curious about the Facebook thing where bc went on a rampage. What caused that to happen? Anyone know more details about what was said and what caused it? I love glass drama lol.

  19. BC was jealous that SG collabb'ed with Hitman Glass. It started from there. Then BC made a wall post about how Hitman Glass and Zob were the same company, and they steal their ideas(lol if you look at all of bc's designs they are basically knock offs of everything). It was basically geared towards Hitman/Zob, but the fact that the jealousy was started by SG's collaboration with Hitman, I guess SG decided not to be friends with him anymore.

  20. I want to flame you so fucking bad but im not going to because I am a productive member of the community unlike some people.

They are not bong makers they are glass blowers who make tubes and other pipes. How can you even compare glassblowers to bus drivers that's completely ass backwards.

Glass blowing is art and you are very misinformed.
