Hi, i have a few, 1 week old plants from seed. I know that i should not start the nutes yet, don't worry, but i would like to know when i should, and also what kinds to start off with. I would like to know if i should wait a certain amount of time, or wait for a certain number of true leaves to grow, or when? Also, please only people with real answers reply, i would like a productive thread, not a bunch of "i use this, and it works". i want to know some specifics, or at least slightly vague, but good comments.
I like to Feed purified water for about 2-3 weeks, then I add about 1/4 strength nuts to my water. I'm a rookie but seems fine for me. Good luck
It really depends. What kind of soil are you using. Some soils even good rated ones will feed for a few weeks.
Well, i'm poor, so I just got Miracle Grow Potting Mix with 6 month plant food mixed in. So i don't know if that actually means i don't need nutrients because i have seen a lot of grows, and they all use nutrients no matter what they grow in.
Get your plants out of mg soil its garbage. You won't have to worry about nutes and you won't get to smoke any quality homegrown.
Everyone trashes on MG nutes and potting soil here. It's really common. The reason why most often is they formulate their soil for housewives who neglect their indoor potting plants, don't know how or when to feed and often forget to water. They extensive test for worst case scenarios with these demographics and formulate their soils to keep plants looking healthy when neglected. That being said it often runs hot (too much N) in the soil to ensure plants stay nice and green so these ladies will share how easy it is to grow with MG products with their lady friends. That's why you'll see such a huge following with grannys. You can grow mj in that soil but do NOT add nutes, it's designed to slow release nutes over time. Every plant especially between varying strains of weed requires different amounts of food and as a result if you have a plant or strain that requires very little feedings, MG can and does burn them. However most hybrid strains these days are pretty tolerant and you should be fine. Do not add nutes . I said it again on purpose. It's got 6 months worth in the soil already. Here is the greater issue which may it may not be a factor for you: Vegetating Mj plants use different amounts and ratios of NPK than do flowering plants. While veg plants use more N than PK flowering plants use more PK than N. flowering plants which are given too much N will have slow or retarded bud production. All of that being said my very first grow ever was done completely with MG products and while I have much better results now with pure organic home made compost and EWC with AACT, it was very successful. So while everyone including me wants to educate you on the evils of MG, be aware it's totally and realistically possible to grow some very dank weed with it. I along with many others have. It's just harder. Feed nothing but water (if using tap let it sit out at least 24 hours to get rid of the chlorine). Until you see the plants showing deficiencies of some kind. If you get nute burn with that medium that is where you will need to transplant to plain soil. I like to mix my own soil with compost, alphalpha meal, perlite, kelp, neem cake, earth worm castings etc and it feeds long term with no nutes needed either. In fact GOOD growers know its GOOD rich soil packed with organic nutrients that really grow nice plants, whereas chemicals are/were designed for soil with terrible nute bioavailability. If worms cant live in your soil, don't put a plant in it. Hope that helps. Since you're on a limited budget and stuck with what you have I just wanted to let you know the sky is not falling. Happy growing. PS if you want to learn more about growing with much better results but even cheaper than having to be on the bottle, check out Stankie's organic thread or mine (click my picture in my signature). Stankie's being the best there is on these forums for organic growing.
Fuck man that mg soil is straight garbage...make sure you.check ph cuz the moment you open that shit its gonna be above 7 ...i cant stress what garbage that shit is..get some real soil and it will make the difference 100%
drhell, Thank you for an informative response. I would like to remind you that my plants are still seedlings, so they are just in solo cups of mg. so, in your opinion, would it be worth the stress on the plants to transplant them into larger containers that have a different mix, maybe with worm castings? Or should i just go with mg for the rest of the grow?
"i use this" and "it works" is kinda how this whole site works isnt it? people give feedback upon their personal knowledge and experiences. with that being said i fert at around 3 weeks. ive been using light warrior seed starter by foxfarm and ive been wanting to start fert around 2 weeks because they seem hungry then. but i dont want to burn them. id rather have them go without for another week then to kill them with nutes. and for that transplant question, if they are in solo cups already with mg soil then just wait until they are ready to be transplanted and then put them into something like happy frog or ocean forest by foxfarm. I love the ocean forest soil, its the shit. makes my plants grow like crazy.
I start my plants in little pots and then transplant them into one gallon pots a week or two after they have sprouted. No stress if transplanted gently and correctly. Up to you if you want to switch soil or not. If you haven't seen nute burn (how many nodes do they have now?), your strain may handle the prefert just fine. I guess it depends on what soil is available in your area and how much you want to spend. Don't let the naysayers tell you you can't grow with MG, but there are better soils out there. I currently have 8 plants that were put into MG soil on 3-18. Transplanted them into one gallon pots couple of weeks ago. All are doing fine and no need to add any nutes yet, anyway. I have found over the years that their "feeds for 6 months" doesn't quite hold up, when growing cannabis at least. Isn't my first grow with MG either. Hell I think I still have some old pictures in my picture gallery here of MG grows...Yep, I do. Still was using milk jugs. BTW, don't use milk jugs. The roots stick to the plastic if you don't transplant in time. Conventional wisdom is once the cotyledons have died off it is time to start a light feeding, but like the dr mentioned in preferted soil it is better to watch the plants and let them tell you when they are hungry (lightened leaf color, slow/stopped growth, etc.).
